While Edie Falco is rightfully winning praise for her performance on Nurse Jackie, Peter Facinelli brings much-needed comic relief to a show that centers around a cheating, pill-popping main character.
As the arrogant, air-headed Dr. Fitch Cooper, Facinelli touches the private parts of his co-workers when nervous, readily accepts gifts originally meant for someone else and is often seen eating. Sloppily.
The actor spoke to E! News about his unique character, along with what - and who - is to come on Nurse Jackie. A few excerpts:
On his character's nervous habit of breast-grabbing: Yep, a couple of times I had to grab breasts. It's always awkward actually. It's a sexual organ but it's so nonsexual. And at the same time it's supposed to be something he's not aware he's doing. It's a subconscious thing, so I have to forget I'm doing it consciously. It's actually hard to play. On paper it's really funny, but when I have to do it, it's pretty difficult.
On his two moms, played by Blythe Danner and Swoosie Kurtz: [They aren't returning] this season, but I only hope that they bring them back because they were so much fun to play off of, and they are great actors and great people.
On future guest stars: We have Victor Garber [Alias] for two episodes. [He's in the final two eps of the season, by the way.] I don't have scenes with him. But I talked to him and hung out. When you have Edie Falco, people want to work with her.
The relationship between Jackie Peyton and Fitch Cooper is rather strained and unusual.
She thinks he's an arrogant ass; and he grabs her breasts when nervous.
According to an interview Peter Facinelli gave to E! News this week, though, the interaction between these two Nurse Jackie characters turns an odd corner in episode 10, airing August 10. Here's what Facinelli had to say...
On a possible romance: In Coop's world, he starts to develop a little something for her. I don't want to say where it goes, but somewhere along the lines romantically in Coop's world, Jackie and he should be together.
On Coop's upcoming girlfriend (played by Jill Flint): I do have a little girlfriend coming on soon very well, and it becomes very difficult emotionally after he decides that he and Jackie should be together. She's great. I like the stuff with me and the girlfriend. It's fun stuff because he's so socially inept with any kind of relationship and yet he doesn't know it. I feel sorry for him in a funny kind of way.
So far, on Nurse Jackie, viewers have fallen in love with Edie Falco as Jackie and Merritt Wever as Zoey.
However, over the next handful of episodes, the Showtime hit will shine a spotlight on another staff member of of All-Saints Hospital: Eve Best's Dr. O'Hara.
According to E! Online, the icy doctor's life isn't as carefree as her nonchalant manner would have fans believe. Why is she seemingly so uncaring toward, well, everyone? Look for a personal crisis to be revealed, one that provides Best with incredible material.
Nurse Jackie viewers will soon see a side to Dr. O'Hara that involves more than just eating at expensive restaurants.

On Nurse Jackie, Peter Facinelli's character, Dr. Cooper, has a unique trait: sexual Tourette's syndrome.
When nervous, he grabs his co-worker's breasts.
According to E! Online, this is a real condition. The show won't overdo its use, however, as the entertainment site reports that Coop won't fondle Jackie again until episode five.
We'll also learn more about Dr. Cooper's famlly. For example, he was raised by two lesbian mothers (portrayed by Blythe Danner and Swoosie Kurtz) that show up in episode six.
It's official: Nurse Jackie is a hit.
After just one episode, the Showtime series has been picked up for a second season.
As for the rest of season one? TV Guide reports that, yes, Jackie will get "caught" cheating on her husband. This ought to land her in double trouble, as pharmacist Eddie (pictured) doesn't appear to know Jackie is married.
Meanwhile, in guest-starring news: Swoozie Kurtz and Blythe Danner will appear in a future episode.
That was fast.
After just one episode, Showtime has green lighted a second season order of Nurse Jackie, following last night's series premiere of the Edie Falco drama. It became Showtime's most-watched series premiere in history.
Nurse Jackie was seen by one million viewers; it then earned another 350,000 during its same-night repeat for a total of 1.35 million viewers.
Weeds, which also premiered last night, saw approximately 1.7 million viewers for its debut, and rerun, episodes combined.
