    ... the flaws outsiders are being told are indigenous to New Jersey. Maybe that's why Mercy failed. It didn't fit the New Jersey stereotype well enough. In any event, the storyline to "Made in Jersey" looks appealing and, at least, the heroine ultimately represents the Garden State in a positive way. I wish it every success and hope supporting characters "made" in Jersey are presented with a slightly broader scope. Onward and upward, Garden Staters!

    A native of Morristown, N.J., I'm the Garden state's biggest fan, even from my adopted state of Massachusetts. (It needs me. I consider myself a missionary.) The promos for "Made in Jersey" look interesting and I'll be tuning in this fall for the premiere. I'm still lamenting the loss of "Mercy," another Jersey-set TV drama that was sadly dropped after one season. The most fascinating part of Jersey-based media (see also, "The Sopranos," "Jersey Shore," et al.) is that residents are portrayed as being tough-minded, brutally honest and what-you-see-is-what-you-get, but also as cosmetically over-baked, unsophisticated and unendingly Mediterranean. (No, I will never forgive Joe Piscopo for his doltish "I'm from Jersey" shtick.) The most appealing part of Mercy, for me, was that the main character, Veronica Callahan, sidestepped some of the more negative stereotypes and, mercifully, left out the painful Italian-Jewish this-must-be-New Jersey accents.
