The Americans got off to a very strong start last night on FX, as 3.2 million total viewers tuned in to watch Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys pose as a happily married U.S. couple, with half of those numbers fitting snugly into the coveted 18-49-year old demographic.

The former figure topped the series opener of American Horror Story, while the latter bested the Sons of Anarchy.

"We’re very happy with premiere ratings for The Americans and, just as importantly, we’re proud of the widespread critical acclaim the show has received,” said FX president John Landgraf. “We have no doubt that when we get the Live+7 time-shifted ratings from last night, The Americans will rank among the best series debuts ever on FX.”
