Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Episode 4 Review: Go Where I Send Thee

at .  Updated at .

I'm a huge fan of this show's creatures and Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Episode 4 gave us one of the creepiest looking so far. The Pied Piper was truly the stuff of nightmares. Can you imagine your 10 year old self coming face to face with that thing?

Nick Hawley returned and struck a deal with Abbie and Ichabod. His knowledge and expertise in exchange for the Piper's bone flute.

I tend to agree with a commenter from last week who said Hawley is a Han Solo type. But how many monsters must he come across before joining the cause? Either way, I dig the character and hope he's one of the good guys.

Sleepy Hollow is at its most frightening when the town's children are involved or threatened. Remember Sleepy Hollow Season 1 Episode 5 with the sickly boy from the 16th century lost colony of Roanoke? How about when Irving's daughter, Macey, was possessed by Ancitif in Sleepy Hollow Season 1 Episode 11?

Well this week, a young girl's disappearance is at the center of the adventure. It was wonderful to learn that Abbie had a personal connection to the case. The girl's mother, Beth, was Abbie and Jenny's case worker when they became wards of the state. The abduction hit close to home making the stakes that much higher.

How much fun was Ichabod's driving lesson with Abbie? "Let us release our own horseman" he tells her. The guy's a regular Mario Andretti. I certainly wasn't expecting him to be that good. Apparently Jenny had already been teaching him to drive. Icabod is well aware that Abbie insist he learn these skills in case anything were to happen to her. "We should be victorious or defeated together" Ichabod assures her. From day one these two characters have shared a chemistry that's magical.

The blood splatter that leads Abbie and Icky to the bone flute was Nick Hawley's. Remember he runs into the Piper later in the episode? Thought I'd mention that because I didn't make the connection until I watched the episode for a second time.

I believe I know what threat we're facing. Ms Sara was not lost, she was lured into these woods by a creature of legend. This instrument belongs to a Pied Piper.

Ichabod

I've got to say, it was a little gross of Ichabod to put that nasty bone flute to his lips. Was it not? I guess someone had to play the flute so Abbie would fall into that trance-like state.

Our history lesson for the week was Ichabod's tale of a mysterious piper luring an entire garrison outdoors and slaughtering them. This flashback made for a wicked action sequence.

The story was later confirmed by Hawley who added that Daniel Lancaster hired the piper and later betrayed him. At that point Moloch made the piper a supernatural soldier in his army.

In typical Sleepy Hollow fashion, it was very clever the way the past tied in with the present and the curse involved a Lancaster disappearing on her 10th birthday. How creepy was the info that 10 is the age the bones are the right size to create the piper's instrument? And Icky had his mouth on that bone... Eeeew Shakespeare!

Hawley continues to dazzle with his knowledge and mercenary skills. However, it's frustrating to see Abbie and Ichabod's constant disappointment in the guy. After facing the creature, don't tell me he doesn't believe his own eyes? Is a paycheck really more important than the end of days? Like Han Solo, I'm expecting Hawley will eventually come around. I just hope it's sooner rather than later.

It was admirable of Abbie to keep her end of the deal, but snapping the bone flute in half was priceless. The thing didn't have to be intact anyway as Henry Parish simply grinds it to dust. What's War want with that flute anyway? Your guess is as good as mine. Share your theory with me in the comments below.

When our heroes return little Sara to her parents, I found the mother's expression odd. That's right she seemed disappointed rather than grateful. Nothing resolves itself that neatly on this show.

Hawley knows his stuff after all. Police records inform us that in 1936 one girl was recovered but her siblings soon died of a mysterious fever. The mother, Beth, is willing to sacrifice Sara to save the rest of her children.

Beth: When I was 7 he took my sister. He takes one child or the curse takes them all. Abbie haven't you ever prayed for something from your past to just go away? Refuse to believe that it's true.
Abbie: This is not who you are. Let me help you.
Ichabod: My good lady. A great evil has taken control of your legacy. For your sake and the sake of all of your children trust us. We can make this right.

Beth lowers her weapon just as the piper appears to claim his prize. The Pied Piper is probably one of the most memorable creatures since last season's Sandman. I was kind of bummed out Abbie impaled the fiend. Guess I would have liked to see him again. I'm sure the writers have some cool baddies lined up for us though, so no worries there.

I was wondering how Irving would react once he learned Parish was the Horseman of War. Was his vision of killing for the Horseman a premonition? Can that future be avoided? Unfortunately, he did sign that contract in blood. As Ezekiel 17:17 reads "Behold all souls are mine" ...oopsie.

What did you think of "Go Where I Send Theeā€¦?" Did you find the Pied Piper to be an interesting villain? Will Hawley eventually come around? Is Irving's soul doomed or will Icky and Abbie find a way to save him? You're up Sleepyheads, hit the comments below and share your thoughts with me. Look for our Sleepy Hollow round table later this week.
