Where are Damon and Bonnie?
Turns out, we've been asking the wrong question, as The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 2 revealed WHEN these characters are: the year 1994. By themselves (or maybe not?) in Mystic Falls.
How will they return to present day?
According to the official CW synopsis, The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 3 ("Welcome to Paradise") Elena and Bonnie will "stumble upon clues" next Thursday, while Tyler will ask Liv for a favor… Matt will make a shocking revelation… Jeremy will make a shocking discovery… and Stefan will return to town in order to avenge Ivy’s death, while simultaneously noticing a big change in Elena.

Viewers can also expect many scenes to take place at the local swimming hole, as Elena tries to set Caroline up with a new love interest there.
