Transparent Season 1 Episode 2 Review: The Letting Go

at .  Updated at .

In Transparent Season 1 Episode 2  Sarah and Maura are not only forced to face their own secret being revealed, but must also deal with the weight and surprise of discovering each other's secrets.

Imagine the shock of the situation. Maura is walking into her house and sees her married, mother of two, oldest daughter making out with her ex-girlfriend from many years ago. While Sarah and Tammy are interrupted to discover, that some woman has walked in on them, only to realize seconds later that it is, in fact, Sarah's father wearing women's clothing.

I guess if coming out was going to be hard for these two, this is one way to avoid all of the built up anxiety. I like that Tammy swooped in with the quick comment to break the immediate awkward silence and tell Maura that she looked great.

I don't think Mort could have come out to a more understanding sibling though. Sarah has already debated her sexuality and seems like she would be the most open.

My whole life I have been dressing up as a man. This is me.

Maura

Being interrupted by the accidental run in with Maura was just a pause button on what was coming next between Tammy and Sarah. What happened between these two in the van seemed like much much more than sex.

At the same time I think Maura coming out to Sarah has also led her to question her identity more. The timing of these two occurrences is perfect, and I can see why Sarah would be more open to exploring her sexuality. I know that my head would be filled with thoughts and questions if I were Sarah.

As for Maura it was great to see her starting to explore being a woman. I see a mentor/friendship relationship developing between Davina and Maura. Davina has a lot she can teach Maura about how to act and feel like a woman, but she also has some experiences to share to help Maura deal with the changing dynamic of relationships.

This is a really big journey that you are on and you just started it so you have got to learn to let go of what anybody thinks of you.

In five years you are gonna look up and none of your family are gonna be there. Not one.

Davina

In this episode we also got to see more of Josh. He is a good guy and seems like he wants to do the right thing. Although, the look on his girlfriend's face didn't seem to enthused about him wanting to marry her and have that baby, so I have a feeling this may not play out the way Josh hopes.

My favorite part of the episode were all of the scenes with Shelley (Judith Light). We met her briefly in the first episode, but this time we were treated to a lot more screen time and wonderful lines. Her personality takes over the screen.

Although I wouldn't want her as my mother, you wouldn't be able to get anything past her. She knew something was different in the groceries just by the weight! That's too much attention to detail!

I am so pleased with this show so far and am also impressed that this is from Amazon Prime. Glad to see more quality shows out there coming from different outlets!

What are your thoughts on the show so far? Do you have a favorite character? What was your favorite scene?
