Z Nation Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Full Metal Zombie

at .  Updated at .

This week our survivors attempted to reach a chopper at a nearby military base on Z Nation Season 1 Episode 4.

Of course, had the thing been functional they would have reached Cali far too quickly and we can't have that.

This installment provided some wacky moments with Z-soldiers and Doc sharing a blunt with a zombie. Yeah this is no Walking Dead.

"Full Metal Zombie" starts in Amish Country. That's right... don't think we've seen Amish Zombies before right?

Romero's classic, Night of the Living Dead, is mentioned and we learn everyone's a carrier. So the thing was spread by birds eh? I kind of like that our heroes are trying to figure out the virus, how it spread and not just going about their day.

10K confesses he was forced to kill his Dad when the man was wounded, his first kill.

An orange VW bug pulls up from the rear, while a zombie roadblock greets the gang up ahead. Cassandra notices the zombies are chained just as humans threaten the group with guns. They want the truck, nothing more.

The thieves take off with the truck. Hey at least they were kind enough to leave the junker behind right?

Like Z Nation Season 1 Episode 2 this installment was frustrating in the sense there's no rhyme or reason, everything's random.

These guys steal the truck, an innocent looking family kills the thieves and takes the truck from them and ultimately the family gets eaten by Z's... how'd that happen they were in a frakkin' truck? "We gotta get off this road" says Garnett.

I get it, the show's trying to shock and try things that are unpredictable. That's cool, but sometimes the ridiculousness serves no real purpose at all. I mean, they got their truck back in the end anyway. What was the point of the first half of the episode?

Back at Northern Light, Citizen Z is going through his database files and we get another look at Z-baby in action when Hammond is mentioned.

Murphy, patient zero, served time for postal fraud. Garnett came next. This was a pretty cool way of recapping the first few episodes to catch up folks just joining the series.

He looks up Addy Carver's social media profile, status single and a little crush begins. "What a tomato" he says. Honestly can't say I've ever heard that expression before. Have you?

Garnett and co. manage to contact Citizen Z via a drive through camera. Yeah I'll admit this bit was amusing, silly but fun. Citizen Z asks to speak to Addy, seriously crushing on her... yeah it's weird for Addy. And Doc tries to order food, what?!? Citizen Z recognizes/confirms Murphy is alive.

Bottom line, our survivors need some alternate form of transportation. Something that will get them cross country quicker.

Garnett: We're in desperate need of alternate transport. We're looking for an airplane, or a chopper, or a hot air balloon. Anything airborne.
Citizen Z: There is one thing. I've been monitoring some random transmissions from what's left of the Emergency Headquarters for Infection Control. I can hear them but they don't respond when I reply, it's pretty garbled. General McCandle might still be holed up there. You're in luck, I have a visual confirmation on that chopper.

Ah visual confirmation should have shown that the blades of the helicopter were missing. Apparently not so much, so Citizen Z sends our guys on a total wild-goose chase.

McLean, Virginia is 20 clicks away from Washington D.C., Murphy's not happy they're headed south instead of west. Dude relax, a helicopter would totally rock. The conversation's cut short because some puppies and kittens arrive.

Yeah everyone's dead at the base, it's been overrun. A sentry greets them, says the General has a chopper but he's too busy for civilians. Roberta explains their mission, Murphy has important info regarding the virus. Soldier approaches and says Murphy smells like a damn Z. Is that what's going on, is Murphy rotting? Is he some kind of hybrid human/zombie?

The sentry asks for a gesture of good will, painkillers or antibiotics. Doc offers up some oxycontin and the dude takes it saying "The General will see you now." The serious and silly moments on Z Nation go hand in hand don't they?

So the General (who's clearly insane) only wants Doc to go up. They've got a wounded man in need of help. That's right, you guessed it too, the General himself is wounded and gangrene has set in. Doc tells him the Z virus will soon take over. All he can do is give him mercy when the time comes.

Well, the General doesn't like this diagnosis so he dumps Doc down an air shaft. Right next to a chomping Z too eeeek!

The stuff in the air shaft is so out there, I'm only going to say a stoned zombie is definitely something we'd never see on The Walking Dead.

We do learn that Doc had a son when he was 19, so that's something. Never got to know him, regrets it. Is this just a bit of info or will we meet the son at some point? Could be that since 10K lost a Dad and Doc never knew his son, those two form a bond. Yeah that's it.

Speaking of 10K, he's adding to his kill count. We learn via flashback his Dad asked for mercy when the time came. The group hears doc shouting from the air shaft. They take the stoned sentry with them and head upstairs.

The Citizen Z social media scenes only helped paint him as a nutbar. Didn't find this cute or amusing, just stalkerish. Let's move on.

The elevator stops at a floor full of Z-soldiers, Garnett throws the sentry right at them. So not cool Garnett, you're supposed to be our hero dude.

Another phobia of Murphy's is elevators so he high tails it outta there. This seemed more about having a character figure out where Doc was.

More zombie attacks take place until a huge ass zombie soldier appears on the scene. Mack tries to take him down, no luck. They pull his grenade pin and push him into the air shaft... yep, the very same one Doc is sitting in KaBOOM! Murphy tells the group Doc was in that air shaft.

When they finally confront the General, turns out the guy's totally wacko. His table full of zombies is all the proof you need to confirm it.

We're on a mission that just might save the human race. This man has antibodies in his blood needed to make a zombie vaccine. We've been tasked with getting him to a CDC lab in California, alive. We need your helicopter.

Garnett

The General agrees to help, hell he'll fly them there himself. Only the chopper's an absolute pile of junk ugh! A couple of Z's attack and the General falls over the side of the building.

As I already mentioned, our survivors go on another mission that goes bust. I'm hoping the writers don't keep pulling this crap on us throughout the season, it's going to get old real quick.

Just as Roberta's telling 10K that Doc didn't make it, a very Z-lookin' Doc appears. Roberta prepares to give him mercy, but somehow he survived that explosion. Everyone's happy and no one wonders how he survived. I'm not even going to go there.

Citizen Z puts a record on. He dedicates it to Addison Carver, she happens to hear it. "I talked to the guy twice, come on" she tells Mack.

Yeah Doc and 10K are definitely bonding and the old man tells 10K his Dad knows what he did for him. Kept his promise. Final flashback, 10K gives his Dad mercy by sinking a blade into his head. The kid's totally hardcore.

Perhaps I wasn't in the mood, or this installment was more laughable than the previous ones, but I didn't really dig it. Next week we get Z-Nado apparently. The Asylum just had to go there didn't they? Is Z Nation not the show we signed on for? I mean, I knew it was going to be fun, but it's much more farcical now than anything else. Time will tell I guess.

What did you guys think of "Full Metal Zombie"? Do you like the direction the show's taking or are you disappointed it's far too goofy now? You're turn zombie fans, hit the comments section and share your thoughts on Episode 4.
