Bob's Burgers Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Best Burger

at .  Updated at .

Are you paying attention? I hope so, because if Bob's Burgers Season 5 Episode 5 taught us anything, it was the importance of black garlic and keeping focu- oh look, pizza tacos!

This week, Bob and Linda decide to enter their Black Garlic Burger into the Wharf It Down Festival's First Annual Best Burger Contest.

With stiff competition and the mean spirited commentary from Chuck Charles, the anchor Bob and Linda got fired from Bob's Burgers Season 2 Episode 9 (aka Beefsquatch), things were off to a stressful start.

To make matters worse, the easily distracted Gene forgot to grab the black garlic, the most important ingredient. With only 14 minutes in the competition, the kids raced across town to find some black garlic and got it to Bob before time runs out.

Overall, I liked the "Best Burger" well enough, especially since it starred the Belcher children, but it was not exactly as strong as the earlier airings this season. While there were some decent one liners, there wasn't as much of a zany comedic spark as there was in Bob's Burgers Season 5 Episode 4. Then again, it's hard to beat a tide of terrible turkeys.

That being said, well executed comedic stakes were once again featured, which is this show's bread and butter as far as I'm concerned. This was a classic underdog story, just like the frequently mentioned "Rocky" movies.

The writers did a great job piling on obstacle after obstacle, such as with the ticking clock and the return of Chuck Charles as well as the fact that the kids were banned form the health foods store. These seemingly insurmountable odds helped making it seem less likely that the Belchers would succeed, which made it more satisfying when they ultimately did (well, kind of anyway.)

I was also particularly pleased with Gene's character arc. With a character as goofy as Gene, you don't typically get many opportunities to get a storyline that has an actual sense of gravity to his character, but that's exactly what we got.

His many screw ups, while definitely a comedic highlight, were treated with an emotional gravity that we don't often see with his character. When his sisters told him he tends to screw everything up, Gene was legitimately upset by it. This raised the stakes in his character's arc. When he ran though the fair, fighting distraction at every turn, and got the garlic to Bob, his success felt earned. I couldn't help but smile for the kid.
