The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 5 Review: The Silver Briefcase

at .

Curiosity may have killed the cat but it made me like Agent Vega a little more in The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 5.

But not right away. Her first cliched response to Jane did nothing but annoy me. Of course Jane's retort was just what I'd expect from him. Smart and witty all at once…

Vega: Curiously killed the cat.
Jane: It also cured Polio.

It was amusing how quickly Jane's radar went up when Colonel Raymond approached Lisbon. Was that simply because he can spot when someone is hiding something or is he just extra observant when any man shows an interest in Lisbon? Probably a little bit of both.

Has anyone else noticed that Abbott is the first boss who really seems to get Patrick Jane? He believes in Jane's abilities far more than any of the bosses they had at the CBI. Jane had nothing more to offer than his instincts telling Abbott that a decorated war veteran may have murdered his wife. The case was closed. Another man had been arrested and yet Abbott let the team look into it, albeit quietly, simply on Jane's hunch.

Jane trying to stir up the Colonel to find out how he'd react was an intriguing scene.  I liked how Jane challenged the Colonel's belief in plans versus listening to one's instincts. The funny thing is that Jane always has a plan, he just knows when to change it to adapt to the scenario as it unfolds.

I was thrilled to see Jane finally bring Vega into the fold on this investigation. I've grown tired of her begging for Cho's attention and acceptance. Watching her try to understand Patrick Jane is far more fun. And watching her embarrassed but cute smile when Jane told her Wiley kept stealing glances at her was adorable.

Speaking of adorable, I've yet to mention Jane and Lisbon. These two couldn't have been more darling if they'd tried. There were those constant smiles, like when Jane told the realtor that he and his girlfriend were looking for a home…or the little touches as when they quickly embraced hands as they walked along with the briefcase.  Each little moment made my shipper heart happy.

Not to mention the open stream of conversation about their future. Jane's question about leaving the FBI had obviously been on Lisbon's mind. Jane had all sorts of plans…Paris, tropical island, sailing around the word, and they were all romantic notions but I think Lisbon was absolutely right when she told him in this The Mentalist quote

Lisbon: I told you.
Jane: Told me what?
Lisbon: You can't quit, you're having too much fun.

And he is having fun, probably for the first time in over a decade. Jane is happy and I hope they both decide to keep investigating crimes while taking some really amazing romantic vacations together.

Tell me TV Fanatics, what would you like to see in Jane and Lisbon's future?  Also, don't forget that The Mentalist is moving to Wednesday nights starting January 7th on CBS.
