Shameless Season 5 Episode 9 Review: Carl's First Sentencing

at .  Updated at .

Am I the only one fed up with Carl this season?

For many years now Carl has been a troublesome character, as he's gone from wayward child to borderline sociopath in the blink of an eye. The drug dealer storyline was okay at best, and I'm not the least bit excited to see this whole year in juvenile detention arc play out, since he's headed there after the events of Shameless Season 5 Episode 9.

Maybe this will be reminiscent of Fiona's jail sentence last season and he'll be out next week. I'm not going to count on that though.

Preparing Carl - Shameless

A healthy amount was spent on Carl and Chuckie as they prepared for their sentencings, with Fiona and Sammi taking very different approaches with the boys. Sammi was informed Chuckie was going to get time no matter what, so she sought to prepare him by telling him to "make nice" with the guards.

Sammi has always been inappropriate, but this scene took things to a new level. Disturbing doesn't even do in justice.

On the other hand, Fiona didn't want Carl to snitch, but she did want him to apologize. Unfortunately, remorse is not a word in Carl's vocabulary.

Fiona: What if he shows remorse?
Carl: What's that?
Fiona: It means you say you're sorry.
Carl: I'm not.

I wasn't expecting Carl to go into court and beg for forgiveness because that would be so out of character, but I wasn't expecting him to be quite so abrasive. He ended up with a year in juvenile detention, while Chuckie ended up with 120 days. If that prison bus ride is any indication, these two will be headed down two very different paths behind bars.

After flush-gate last week, Ian woke up and had a breakdown. Mickey was able to calm him down, but only after he almost attacked Debbie with a baseball bat. This finally seemed to be the wakeup call he needed and he and Mickey went to get his medication.

Was anyone a little freaked out by the later chat between Ian and Lip? I really hope Ian doesn't do anything drastic.

Speaking of Lip, he had a pretty decent week! Not only did he get his tuition paid, he also bedded his ridiculously hot professor! It's hard not to think there's something a little fishy with the financial aid guy's friend paying Lip's tuition.

Are there really nice people out there who don't want anything back in return? Sure there are. But this is Shameless and in this world people aren't that nice.

And what are we to make of Helene's husband and the fact that he walked on his naked wife and student and his first question was what kind of omelette Lip wanted? Weird.

Poor Lip has gotten some odd storylines this year and that trend doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon.

Oddly enough, the best aspects of this episode involved Frank and I don't know that I've ever felt that way. Frank's doctor from Shameless Season 5 Episode 8 was back, but she couldn't bring herself to care about Frank's gunshot wound, as she had just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Doctor Bianca spent the hour gallivanting around town with Frank, drinking cheap vodka at the Alibi, purchasing drug from a shady street corner and smoking weed by the river. It was hard not to feel for this young woman whose entire world was just upended and honestly if she was hoping to experience a day of unexpected firsts, Frank Gallagher truly is the best tour guide to have.

Not only did Frank show her the ropes, he also gave her some decent advice. She even got a chance to yell to God.

Fuck you! I'm 32, I was just getting started. Fuck you pancreas! Fuck you cells! Fuck you med school! Fuck you!

Bianca

Frank seemed to really fall for the doctor and it was sweet to see him take her home and put her to bed. I hope this isn't the last we see of Bianca.

Kev and V need to get back together like yesterday, right? Watching Kev shack up with college students is not something I want to see every week. By episode's end, it looked like he was finally back on Team V, but is he going to be honest about his few days in college?

All I know is, if I never hear the phrase rape walker again, it will be far too soon.

Oh, and mark my words, by season's end Fiona will have to decide between Gus and Sean. With Gus out on tour, Fiona and Sean will have time to get back to their flirty banter and wistful looks. I like their chemistry, but I'm still bitter about Jimmy/Steve/Jack.

I know. I will have to let it go eventually.

Now it's your turn to let me know what you thought about "Carl's First Sentencing". Were you annoyed with Carl? Will he actually spend a year in juvenile detention? Are you scared for Ian? Do you want to see more scenes between Fiona and Mickey?

Leave me a comment and we can talk about everything!

NOTE: Shameless Season 5 Episode 10 is titled "South Side Rules" and airs March 22nd!

Shameless Season 5 Episode 9 Quotes

Frank: Eh, it's a tragedy when a young man ends up behind prison bars.
Fiona: Bad parenting.
Frank: Oh, don't blame yourself.

Fiona: Spare me, Sammi. Your kid did not get arrested because of me.
Sammi: Cause of your thug brother. In one fell swoop, you Gallagher's managed to ruin his whole future.
Fiona: Lets be honest, Chuckie was not exactly destined for great things. Pack your shit and get out.
