Daredevil Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Cut Man

Daredevil introduces Night Nurse!

How is it possible that Daredevil Season 1 Episode 2 was even more intense than the first installment? It's a good thing Claire Temple found Matt in that dumpster. Sure, he can take a beating, but he's going to need her expertise moving forward.

The hallway fight scene at the end, is proof Marvel/Netflix are not just delivering your typical comic book show, they're creating art and doing it with a helluva lot of style. Wow!

Matt Meets Claire - Daredevil

The blood on the floor certainly wasn’t a good sign. Yep, Daredevil took a major beating and ended up in a dumpster. The guy is pretty lucky though, what are the chances a nurse - of all people - would find him?

It was fantastic to see Rosario Dawson’s character, Claire Temple, introduced in this second episode. The writers have combined the character from the Luke Cage comics with Night Nurse for the series. It’s safe to say she did her job rather well, saving Matt on several occasions. I imagine Claire is one character we’ll continue to see as these four Marvel/Netflix series roll out.

The flashbacks appear to be an ongoing thing, and they work for me as a storytelling device. How badass was little Matt stitching up his dad’s face? Having seen the movie, I knew his dad wins a fight he was supposed to throw and gets killed. Even this early, I felt really bad for the poor kid. Those Murdock’s sure do get hit a lot. Still, all his misfortunes made Matt the man he became.

Though this installment was stronger than the first, the Foggy/Karen stuff was a bit much. Sure, it lightened up the mood, but I kept wanting to check in with Matt and Claire.

Claire: Are you going to listen to me this time?
Matt: Where am I?
Claire: You're in my apartment.
Matt: Who are you?
Claire: I'm the lucky girl who pulled you out of the garbage.
Matt: You've seen my face.
Claire: Yeah.
Matt: Great.
Claire: Your outfit kind of sucks, by the way.
Matt: Yeah, it's a work in progress.

There was undeniable chemistry between Matt and Claire. Hey, perhaps Foggy and Matt won’t find themselves in some love triangle over Karen after all. Besides, did you see her handle his collapsing lung? He’s stumbled across his own personal physician for Pete’s sake. You can’t beat that.

It’s funny that Matt would not share his name with Claire, but he clued her in on the whole human trafficking ring thing. I was wondering how he ended up in that dumpster. Turns out the Russian’s were responsible.

The way the writers are using Matt’s heightened senses, instead of visually painting a picture, is brilliant. I loved Claire’s reaction when Matt warned her someone was coming.

Matt: There's someone in the building, a man, going from door to door.
Claire: How do you know that?
Matt: Shh. He's on the third floor already. Smells like Prima cigarettes and discount cologne.
Claire: You can smell a man on the third floor?
Matt: You'll smell him soon enough. He really likes that cologne.

The bit with the fire extinguisher was amazing. I thought from that height it surely must’ve killed the guy; not so much. He still had a bit more torture in store at the hands of Daredevil. Can you believe he later tossed him off the building into a dumpster below? Since the fire extinguisher didn’t do him in, I figured that fall did the trick. Nope, damn that guy is like a frakkin’ cockroach! I’m sure he’ll come out of that coma at some point.

Basically, this was all a bonding experience for Matt and Claire. It not only brought them closer together, but we learned she had a idea who he was from the start.

Daredevil: You knew which side you were on the moment you found me. Why'd you help me Claire?
Claire: I'm a nurse. Work the ER at Metro-General. A few weeks ago, cops bring in three men. Said they were robbing tourists, beating them up pretty bad. Apparently, a man in a black mask took issue with their activities and decided to step in. I counted nine broken bones between them. A few days after that, EMTs bring in a 19-year-old waitress, said some guy she knew waited for her after work in the parking lot, attacked her... tried to drag her in the alley. She said she screamed and screamed, and a man in a black mask heard her and he saved her life. So, yeah, word's getting around.

Ultimately, Daredevil got the information he needed from the captive Russian and set out to save the boy. How amazing was that hallway fight sequence? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything quite like it. There’s no question this show has raised the bar, even as early as episode 2. While I enjoy Arrow, the fight choreography on display in Daredevil is just another level.

After all that, it was definitely a win to see Daredevil walk out of there with that little boy. He’s going to need some patching up now, good thing Claire’s sticking by his side. I'm not sure what Matt would do without her.
