Shameless Season 5 Episode 12 Review: Love Songs (In the Key of Gallagher)

at .  Updated at .

Ah, another season of Shameless has come to an end.

To me, nothing beats Shameless Season 4. It felt the most complete and I really felt like everyone elevated their performances and the stories were incredible. So if that's the holy grail season, I'd have to rate this season just a notch below that, but not by much.

Shameless Season 5 Episode 12 sadly brought some relationships to an end and left some things hanging in the air. It's going to be a long summer and fall for us Shameless fans.

Keeping Bianca Happy - Shameless

Frank isn't my favorite, I've said that time and time again, but I think I can honestly say I've never liked him more than when he sat on the beach with Bianca and just held her. All of their scenes had a certain calming beauty to them, but none more so than this one.

Each week we've seen Bianca fall farther and farther and it seemed pretty clear where things were headed. That didn't make it less heartbreaking to see her dive into the water and never resurface.

Bianca: Thank you.
Frank: For what?
Bianca: You have made me happy. I've never been very happy.

Sure, Frank has had his moments, but Bianca really tapped into that buried part of Frank no one else ever gets to see. Frank H. Macy has always done great work, but those quiet moments he shared with Bianca were amazing to watch.

RIP Bianca.

Another rest in peace shout out has to go to the relationship between Ian and Mickey, as it came to end tonight.

I understand where Ian is coming from, but it's so hard to watch him push Mickey away when he really does love him. Their love is far from perfect, but it's real. And it was devastating to watch Mickey come to the realization that love just wasn't going to be enough for Ian.

Monica was all over the place, as usual, but she was on point when she told Ian about happiness.

Ian, Ian, I'm finally happy. People like us, we can be happy. I love him and that's the most important thing, to find somebody to love, right? Who loves you back for who you are. I want that for you.

Monica

I truly hope Ian and Mickey find their way back to one another.

You know who else should find their way back to one another? Fiona and Debbie.

These two used to have such a strong bond and they have had a massive disconnect for awhile now. Debbie is growing up far too fast, but Fiona isn't really able to communicate that to her because Debbie has seen her make countless mistakes.

Fiona yelling at Debbie to not have a boy sleep in her bed or preach about Debbie not knowing Derek sounds extremely hypocritical considering her track record. That being said, Fiona isn't wrong, but Debbie has built up a lot of resentment and anger towards her big sister.

God, I hope Debbie isn't pregnant, even though that ending sure made it seem like she is. They made it a point to drive home the fact that Derek's dad wouldn't approve of him sleeping over, so he's 100% not going to approve of them having a baby.

Okay, with all of the heavy stuff out of the way, let's lighten things up a bit and talk about how many times Fiona got called out on her crap tonight. She even called herself out.

Could I possibly be doing a worse job at raising these kids?

Fiona [to Gus]

After five seasons, I've come to the realization that I have a love-hate relationship with Fiona. At her core, she's a decent person, but she makes awful life decisions.

One awful decision? Marrying nice guy Gus.

Gus is a handsome, well-intentioned guy, but after about seven episodes, I still don't know him from a hole in the wall. It was clear from the get-go this was a marriage that wasn't meant to last and it would have been sadder to watch if I cared more for Gus.

Now, I was a little thrown by that final interaction between Fiona and Sean. She effectively chose him and laid her feelings out there; but are they together now? Based on the fact that Sean ended their kiss and then told Fiona to grow up, I'm going to go with no.

I think there's a lot more to explore between Fiona and Sean and I hope we get to see them try to navigate a relationship next season. Could Sean be her one true love? I'm not sold yet, but I could be persuaded.

We can all say with certainty that Amanda is not Lip's one true love. I was waiting for her to explode on Lip and she finally went there.

I love me some Lip, but he deserved that punch in the face. Maybe he doesn't owe Amanda anything, but he's a better guy than to just leave her in the room like that. She's done a lot for him and he was a jerk to her.

The weird Lip/Helene/Theo thing I could do without talking about. I don't get it and there is just no scenario where it ends well for Lip.

Elsewhere, Kev and V FINALLY came together and it looks like they'll be back to being the couple we all used to know. And Sammi escaped the box and tried to shoot Mickey. She missed.

Well, that's all folks. We have a lengthy wait ahead of us, so in the meantime, let's talk about this amazing season and share our hopes and dreams for season six.

Thanks for checking in with me this season and sharing your thoughts. Till we meet again next winter!
