Empire Season 2 Episode 7 Review: True Love Never

at .  Updated at .

Cookie and Delgado are pretty stinking hot, am I right?

Those two could not keep their hands off one another on Empire Season 2 Episode 7 and while it's nice to see Cookie happy, it's also infuriating because we all know it's just a matter of time before everything blows up in her face!

It's really a shame, because those two are smoking hot together.

Things picked up exactly where they left off, with Cookie and Delgado getting it on. Clearly Delgado's long con is to get Cookie to trust him so he and his cohorts can rob her!  Delgado's plan to get her to stay in bed for three (!) days was a pretty genius idea if you think about it.

Hours of sexy time and Chinese food in bed can make a woman fall for a guy pretty quickly.

He's also doing a good job of not pushing his agenda too hard. When he brought up the park idea for Cookie's concert, he wasn't overly aggressive about it. He even backed Hakeem at one point during the meeting with the kidnappers.

I love that Hakeem already doesn't trust Delgado at all. Empire Season 1 Hakeem would have been so self absorbed, he wouldn't have even cared about Cookie and her personal life. But we have a new Hakeem these days.

We have the Hakeem that believes in Laura so much, he's willing to do whatever it takes to get her to believe in herself, even when Cookie has her doubts.

Cookie: You are wasting your time, but see you can't see that because you're blinded by the ass.
Hakeem: I ain't even touch the girl.
Cookie: She must really got you sprung then. She ain't got it, Kem.

How sweet was it to see Hakeem really take an interest in making someone better? Somewhere along the way, he turned into a mentor, and he did a very good job of molding Laura into the star she's clearly destined to be.

It'll be interesting to see them as a couple now because it's been well documented that Hakeem is a ladies' man. If there's one girl who may be able to tame him though, it's Laura.

Elsewhere, Lucious was busy continuing to be the world's worst father. It's beginning to get old seeing him spurn Andre over and over again. I keep waiting for Andre to snap, and he looked like he was on the verge tonight, before he met with his weird reverend.

I wasn't exactly sure what the reverend was getting at when he talked to Andre, because he seemed more concerned with Andre staying in power than he did with Andre's mental status.

Bringing the Deputy DA back was an odd choice, since I'm fairly confident no one would have remembered who she was had we not seen her in the previews before the episode started. When she was trying to seduce him, I never thought for a moment Andre would fall back into that bad habit, but I was surprised he took the blackmail route.

Andre is a changed man in some ways and the same as he ever was in others.

Cookie: You know, Lyon Dynasty is right around the corner if you wanna lay something down.
Jamal: Dad would be so pissed. I don't even care. Let's go!

The Cookie and Jamal reunion has been a long time coming, but I just hate thinking about what it's going to do to Hakeem. I'm waiting for the day Hakeem and Jamal figure out that they need to stop being jealous of one another, support the one parent who truly cares about them and kick the other parent to the curb.

The flashbacks do help put Lucious's life into better perspective, but they're not changing the fact that he's a terrible human being – and an even worse father.

Random Notes

  • Mimi was back, pumping people full of morphine and crying during a threesome. She got Lucious hooked up with a massive streaming company that's going to push Empire to new heights. Or at least that's what we were told. I'm less interested in that and more interested in who was making her cry during that sex scene.
  • Huey Jarvis was supposed to be like a Quincy Jones type, right? He's clearly a legend in the music industry and a man who made Lucious openly jealous of Jamal. He also had like 50 awards on his wall.
  • I think I have to accept that Frida is a thing, and she's not going anywhere. She's a lot more tolerable when she's just rapping and not being a pain in the ass.
  • I never want to hear "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom" again. Seriously.
  • Song of the week? Bottoms Up was great and really made me want a mimosa.
  • Is it wrong of me to want Delgado to end up being a good guy so he and Cookie can ride off into the sunset together?

It's time for you guys to weigh in on "True Love Never". What do you make of Delgado? Is there a future for Hakeem and Laura? How long until Andre snaps?

Drop me a comment so we can talk it out and remember to watch Empire online right now so you're not out of the loop!
