Queen of the South Season 1 Episode 5 Review: Un Alma. Un Mapa. Dos Futuros.

Although no shots were fired on Queen of the South Season 1 Episode 5, it was clear that the war has begun between Camila and Epifanio Vargas.

As quietly as it started, I still wonder if anyone will be left standing once it’s over.

Moving Things Forward - Queen of the South

Cesar may have run back and told Epifanio everything but Camila still managed to plant the seeds of doubt in his mind. Was her goal simply to allow that paranoia to take root or was she hoping to turn him into an ally? I’m really not sure.

Unfortunately for her, Epifanio is doing everything he can to cut off her drug supply in a high stakes game of one-upsmanship.

Will the Columbian side with Camila or Epifanio? Which one wields more power? At this moment I can’t tell but I’m curious to see how this plays out.

For Epifanio, it seems to be as much about male ego as anything. He wants his wife to say she needs him, walk away from the cartel she’s built and be by his side as he runs for governor. But Camila is so much more than a figurehead first lady.

One of the best moments was when Epifanio admitted that dealing with his wife can be exhausting…and very dangerous.

It’s like they are two monsters hell bent on mass destruction while hoping they will be the last one left standing.

Meanwhile, Teresa and Brenda were in their own separate fights for survival.

Brenda has turned out to be far stronger and smarter than I ever imagined…and she certainly knows how to market drugs.

Do you get the feeling that if Brenda, Teresa, and Camila ever joined forces that these women could rule the world?

Teresa’s night took several unexpected turns, from meeting James girlfriend and borrowing the fancy dress, to attending the party, to watching a man be murdered, it was one surprise after another.

Not only was Teresa upset to have to watch a man be killed, but she had to feel somewhat responsible for leaving him behind, even though he told her to get out.

James was right. I don’t think there was anything she could have done to stop Eric from killing him, but the goodness in Teresa wanted to try. How long will that part of her soul survive in this new world.

For better or worse, Camila sees something in Teresa and in this Queen of the South quote, she’s willing to try and make an emotional connection that she can sense Teresa needs…

Your real family may have abandoned you, but this family won't.

Camila

Is that what they are, family?

Or is Teresa simply a pawn in the war of the roses?
