With The Vampire Diaries coming to a close, it has fans thinking about which characters should pop up before the series takes one final bite out of Friday nights.
The character the fans want to return most is Nina Dobrev's Elena Gilbert. She was the central character when the show first kicked off all those years ago.
It was her narration we heard at the beginning of most episodes, until her departure at the close of The Vampire Diaries Season 6.
It would be a great fan service to have her back for the final season. The show just wouldn't feel complete without some sort of resolution for Elena Gilbert.
Dobrev's departure from the show breathed some much-needed life into the show. The show went so much darker and other characters got a lot of time to shine without Dobrev.
But she was never really gone from the show. Pretty much every episode of The Vampire Diaries Season 7 had some sort of reference to the character, who was indulging in a deep sleep.
Heck, some fans even thought she was going to be revealed as the Huntress. Wouldn't it have been a much better twist if Rayna Cruz just didn't exist and Kai's malicious spell somehow came undone and made Elena go after her friends?
That would have made for some interesting television, but it just didn't seem to pan out that way.
It does appear there's a good chance for Nina to return as Elena for the final season of The CW drama.
“There are discussions going on with Nina,” CW president Mark Pedowitz confirmed to reporters Thursday during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
“We’d love to have Nina back. She was great for The CW. She was integral for The Vampire Diaries.”
Julie Plec even revealed recently at Comic-Con that she and Nina Dobrev had an agreement that Dobrev would return for the series finale.
