Queen Sugar Round Table: Darla or Ms. Velez? You Choose!

at .

Charley went toe to toe with the Jacob Boudreaux, Ralph Angel and Darla got closer, and Aunt Vi reopened the High Yellow on Queen Sugar Season 1 Episode 11.

Our TV Fanatics, Jasmine, Lee, and Christine O., are here to debate whether Charley is moving too fast with Remy, if they want Darla or Ms. Velez with Ralph Angel and just how nasty the Landrys and Boudreauxs will get after “All Good.”

How do you think the Landrys and Boudreauxs will try to mess with the Bordelons?

Jasmine: I'm scared to even think about it after hearing how awful they were decades before. They're definitely going to ice the Bordelons out of everything by using their power and reputation to blackball them.

Lee: I'm having horrific visions of literal scorched earth, as in, if we can't have the land, you're not going to have it either. I can totally see the Landrys and Bordreauxs setting fire to the cane fields, or worse. After all, we know they've done far worse in the past. I did love seeing Charley and Ralph Angel get tough with them, though. The Bordelons are definitely not going down without a fight!

Christine: Given the horrifying things that occurred in the past, it’s clear that these families have no scruples and will do anything to get what they want. It really is frightening to think about, but I think their first step will be to block the roads so that the Bordelons can’t get their crop out to a mill. With the clock ticking, even a small delay could render their harvest worthless.

Remy and Charley - Queen Sugar Season 1 Episode 11

Is Charley moving too fast with Remy?

Jasmine: I like Remy, and I like the idea of them together, but yes. She has a lot going on right now. She's not even officially divorced. Micah is barely adjusting. It wouldn't hurt to slow things down.

Lee: I couldn't help but cringe when Micah walked in on them together. As Nova said, no one can fault Charley for wanting a good man, especially after everything Davis has put her through. But, with everything else going on with the farm and the family, slowing down just a little bit might be for the best.

Christine: I love Remy and I think they could be great together, but Charley needs time to grieve the loss of her marriage and put it to rest before moving on to someone else. Rushing into a new relationship is only asking for heartache.

Who would you prefer to see Ralph Angel with romantically, Darla or Ms. Velez?

Jasmine: Ms. Velez. He had his time with Darla. She's Blue's mom, so they'll always be connected. I just don't think they're good for each other. She's still a recovering addict and he still does enough stupid stuff that has him narrowly avoiding jail. I think Ms. Velez would be good for him. She's more stable, doesn't have that history with him or any emotional baggage. It's like a clean slate with someone who could bring out the best in him.

Lee: I totally agree with Jasmine. I think it's great that Darla and Ralph Angel have reconciled and are trying to be better parents to Blue; having a son together will always bond them in a very special way. But I also think she's still a bit of a bad influence on him. He could have a more stable and responsible presence in his life like Ms. Velez.

Christine: I disagree. I think that Ralph Angel and Darla are both trying to put their lives back together and are fighting to do so for not only themselves but for their son. I think they can understand one another’s struggles the way no one else can. I’m really rooting for the two of them.

Ralph Angel and Darla - Queen Sugar Season 1 Episode 11

What did you think of the spiritual ritual Nova performed on Charley?

Jasmine: I thought it was interesting to see. Nova's faith is very important to her, but they haven't explored it as much as I would probably like. There's a lot of mysticism and supernatural elements explored on shows, but I can't recall seeing a lot of spirituality to voodoo (?) etc., without it being mocked.

Lee: I thought it was fascinating. This feels like another plot point that the show implied would be important in early episode but then forgot about, and I'm glad they've remembered it! I would love to explore more of Nova's mysticism, as well as what led her to these beliefs. I am willing to bet it was her mother.

Christine: I wish they would explore and explain more about Nova’s spiritual beliefs, because they are so different, to most of us, and therefore fascinating. Plus they seem to play a lot into her character and her family history.

What was your favorite quote or scene from this episode?

Jasmine: One of my favorite quotes is, "And though she be but little, she is fierce." I loved it when tiny Charley Bordelon, with those expressive Bambi-like eyes, looked up at Landry and didn't so much as flinch when she went toe-to-toe with him! She is always so fearless, rarely fazed, and a force to be reckoned with.

Lee: I also loved seeing little Charley in her Prada dress give Boudreaux what for! She has had to be tough and smart to be as successful as she has been in the sports world, and I can't wait to see her use those talents to beat the Landrys and Boudreaux.

Christine: My favorite was Nova taking the time to speak to Micah about how much his mother as been through and how lucky he is to have her in his life. Micah needed to see things from a different point of view and it was great to see Nova step up as both a sister and an aunt.
