Supernatural Season 12 Episode 8 Review: LOTUS

Lucifer became the president of the United States.

It sounds ridiculous, but that’s where Supernatural Season 12 Episode 8 decided to take the Lucifer-with-no-plan storyline.

And then it took a turn, knocked Lucifer out of the No. 1 problem spot for the Winchesters, and revealed that he’s got an unholy kid on the way.

Bet we’ll see that birth on the Supernatural Season 12 finale…

On the one hand, I’m glad that Sam was able to expel Lucifer from the president’s body with help from his special egg (a weapon that came just in the nick of time, too!) and send him back to hell.

The effects for that scene were pretty neat, and having Sam, Lucifer's true vessel, be the one to do it felt fitting.

Though, can’t Lucifer just turn around and get out of hell? What did that actually do to him?

I’m sure he’ll be back, but I’m glad we seem to be getting a bit of a break from Lucifer.

Time to meditate - Supernatural Season 12 Episode 7

It’s disappointing that a character that was so memorable as a chilling and fantastic villain more recently has spent his time doing trivial things and shouting whiny rants. He just doesn’t feel like the same character anymore.

Though, I will admit, that Lucifer as the archbishop walking around while the crosses flipped upside down was creepy.

And even watching Sam and Dean discover what Lucifer had done before leaving the archbishop’s body felt more in line with a Lucifer from the past.

But then it was off to the president, and I just found myself not caring.

You’d think that Satan taking over one of the most powerful people in the world would have more of an edge, more scary stakes at the possibilities of what he could do with that position.

Instead, we got some jokes about nukes and Lucifer spending his time having pillow talk with one of the president’s employees.

The new Lucifer vessel? - Supernatural Season 12 Episode 8

I am curious as to where the story is going to go involving Lucifer’s spawn, but it’s surprising that he hadn’t thought of a plan like that before. I guess he was too busy not having a plan…

There was a bit of a cool twist in having Mr. Ketch show up to help Sam and Dean out with the grenade launcher. And I did laugh at Dean’s mention of the grenade launcher.

They do have some pretty cool toys, don’t they?

I wasn’t won over by the new character completely, but him working with the Winchesters feels like a good change of pace. Though, where was he when Sam and Dean were getting arrested?

Anyone wondering if the Secret Service arresting Sam and Dean is really part of some British Men of Letters ploy?

Yet, it was the ending of the episode that was the most confounding.

Why did Sam and Dean not go with Castiel and Kelly at the end? And why did Castiel not use his powers on the Secret Service like he had before?

Castiel gazes fondly into the distance - Supernatural Season 12 Episode 8

It felt so random that Sam and Dean would actually wind up arrested rather than fleeing with Castiel.

And then there was the fact that not only did Kelly manage to get the slip on Castiel, she decided she wanted to keep the baby, and she called Castiel to even let him know. What?

She knows it’s Lucifer’s baby, right? And how did Castiel manage to let that happen other than the fact there needed to be a cliffhanger because it was the midseason finale?

Crowley doesn't seem thrilled - Supernatural Season 12 Episode 8

I wanted to like this episode and hoped it would be a major upswing from Supernatural Season 12 Episode 7.

But it just felt lackluster for most of it and spent far too much time with Lucifer doing not much as the president.

There certainly could be some interesting story to come from Lucifer’s baby, but the contrived ending left me scratching my head rather than exuberantly looking forward to what’s next.

Maybe it needs another viewing, but “LOTUS” just wasn’t the impressive and exciting 2016 send-off I was hoping for.
