The Vampire Diaries Midseason Report Card: Best Couple, Worst Episode & More

at .  Updated at .

When The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 8 returns in January, we'll be barreling down the back end of the vampire drama's final season.

Damon will (hopefully) be reunited with his love. Steroline will (hopefully) have their June wedding. Matt Donovan will (probably) survive to see the end of the series and remain human in the process.

Will his long lost father survive? Meh. Jury's out on old Peter. (Also, what secrets is this dude hiding, because YOU KNOW he's hiding something!)

Before all of this happens, let's take a look back at some of the best and worst moments from the first half of The Vampire Diaries Season 8.

Who's our reigning best new couple? Which new character is least useful? Scroll or click on through to find out!

1. Best Episode So Far

Paul Wesley directed The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 6, The One Where Stefan Makes a Deal, and it was, by far, the best of the season. There was love! There was heartbreak! There was scheming! There was a nearly dying Enzo! Damon proved he's not totally gone by saving the twins (and Alaric still killed him...) and we got official word that Stefan's going dark! Again. This was a perfect episode.

2. Worst Episode So Far

It's been a pretty stellar final season so far, but the Guess Who's Dying at Dinner Christmas episode didn't really do it for us. Stefan spent half the episode dead. Sybil tried to bond with Caroline. Alaric read a LOT of books to the twins. All for nothing truly magical to happen until the final 5 minutes. Oh well. Can't win 'em all.

3. Best Couple Alert!

Alright, alright. I KNOW a lot of y'all were jonesing for Steroline to take top billing, but guys, Bonenzo? Bonenzo are giving us LIFE this season. If anyone on this show is deserving of a little bit of happiness, it's Bonnie Bennett. And Enzo? Well, we can forget that whole Lily Salvatore love thing. It wasn't real anyway. Not like Bonenzo. (Let's get them a spin-off where they just sit around and Enzo teaches Bonnie to play guitar!)

4. Least Interesting Couple

Matt Donovan has been an orphan supporting himself on tips from the Grill for as long as this series has existed. Except now he has a dad. But we don't care because it's the final season, and the only thing we really care about is whether or not Matt makes it out of The Vampire Diaries as a human. Matty Blue and his dad, Peter, win for least interesting couple.

5. Most Shocking Plot Twist

Okay, so CADE isn't the most shocking plot twist. The Sirens storyline is sort of weirdly real-world mythological. But what's SUPER interesting about Cade, what makes his presence the most shocking plot twist, is that mysterious sucking-into-a-black-hole the souls he captures do when they're on the way to Hell. That's how Katherine Pierce left which is leading to a LOT of speculation that when Nina Dobrev returns, it'll be as Katerina Petrova and not as Elena Gilbert. Which, hey, we're okay with that.

6. Least Shocking Plot Twist

So Sybil had a contingency plan where she'd keep her immortality. None of us are shocked that the VILLAIN remained the VILLAIN. But for someone who claims to have hated her need to consume the flesh of men in order to stay young and beautiful and the deal that got her there in the first place, she sure does seem content not to die.

7. Most Intriguing New Character

Maybe this is a weird vote for most intriguing new character, but Seline wins. (Because the other new characters are two interns, Satan, and his minion). So sure, she was pretty bad. She wanted to steal the twins and turn them into Sirens so they could take over and she coule be free. That's pretty heinous. BUT! But. You guys. When Sybil cut her out of the immortality deal, she totally shunned her sister and is making her way to Team Good Guy. We'll be watching you, Seline.

8. Least Interesting New Characters

Guys, the final season is not the time to introduce characters we're supposed to find interesting. Georgie and the guy (Damian?) are just...not useful. Except Georgie's death was marginally useful in that it showed us a very, very familiar scene, but still. Not useful. Super not interesting. (WHAT WAS WITH HER TATTOO?)

9. Least Emotional Death Number 1

We really hate to say this, but there was nothing truly shocking or emotional about Tyler Lockwood's death. The *only* thing which would've made this more interesting is if he'd managed to bite Damon before biting the dust. A Devil-serving vampire under the power of werewolf bite hallucinations? Yes, please! That would've been Tyler's parting gift. Instead he died in a trunk and Matt was the only one who was really sad to see him go.

10. Least Emotional Death Number 2

Remember Sarah Salvatore? If you don't, it's okay. No need to worry yourself. She's just a random character who was thrown at us a while ago so Enzo had someone to torment while he was trying to torment Stefan (for reasons which still only marginally make sense) and then she died. Sybil killed her. It was weird. None of us cared.

11. Overall Grade So Far

All things considered, The Vampire Diaries Season 8 isn't doing too shabby as far as final seasons are concerned. There's the right balance of action and intrigue with emotional moments that leave us hoping our favorites find a little bit of happiness when all is said and done. (And if someone wrecks Bonenzo, I'm starting a campain or something.) We're getting to see a lot of the things we love like Snarky Damon, Ripper Stefan, Caroline taking charge and figuring things out, and Alaric being smart and nerdy while also being a capable fighter. It's been a good run so far. A- for the first half of The Vampire Diaries Season 8.

Vampire Diaries Quotes

Oooh, you know I don't know. Every time we try and go on a date you get kidnapped, I get sent to a prison world, or your feelings get compelled away...

Damon

Damon: My new girlfriend. Andie Starr. Action News.
Alaric: It's not called Action News.
Damon: I know. I like just saying it.
