Incorporated Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Sweating the Assets

Finally, finally, finally a Laura centric episode! And it was well worth the wait.
It took slogging through a morass of tedium, but on Incorporated Season 1 Episode 6 we finally got to see what happened to Laura eight years ago, and how it started her downward spiral of self destruction.
I've made it very clear that the only character that means a damn to me on this show is Laura. She has a heart, a soul, and actual FEELINGS, which is very hard to come by in this world.
The fact that she is being used by Ben is heartbreaking, because for some reason she really loves that louse.
Ben is such a stone cold schemer, and to use another human being the way he uses Laura is reprehensible.
I mean, using birth control behind Laura's back, when you know that all she wants in the whole world is a baby? That's nasty!
The poor girl had to have gone through a terrible trauma to be the hot mess that she is, and the episode did not disappoint in showing what happened.
I know that the rich Green Zoners get their jollies from going into the seedy Red Zone for some carnal pleasures, but how many times does somebody have to get kidnapped before they go out with armed security? Geez!
She is such a good person, that even after she gets her frikkin' EAR chopped off she tells one of the kidnappers that her blood is on a teddy bear on the floor! Unbelievable.
Would YOU be that understanding? I don't think so.
The impact of Laura killing one of her captors is probably the main reason for her messed up head. The guilt she feels is suffocating her, and the cutting she does seems to be the only relief she can get at this point.
The cold manner that Spiga deals with human life is pretty sucky, too. Kill 'em all, as long as our intellectual property is safe -- damn.
Laura's ice cold relationship with her mother makes sense now as well. Not only did she not want to pay the ransom for her own daughter, but she is probably the reason Laura's dad is dead. Wow!
Laura: You are such a liar, even the kidnappers seemed to know how Spiga deals with abductions. If the company saved people, then you would never have to send him to save me? Did you really think that I'd never find out?
Elizabeth; You were only a child.
Laura: You owe me the truth!
Elizabeth: I risked everything for you. Not just my career, but my life. And I did it to save you.
Laura: Which proves you could have saved Dad if you wanted to.
This episode had all the things that the previous ones have lacked: emotion, real life and death stakes, action, and very little Ben (I kid -- not really).
I asked in my last review why Julian was so paternal with Laura. Well, now we know.
You're safe-no one's going to hurt you. I'm Julian. You're mother sent me to bring you home. We have to move quickly-let's go.
Julian
I never thought Julian would turn out to be a good guy, but that's how it's shaping up. He has a traumatic past, just like Laura, so that's where their bond is.
Whatever it is in his past that has scarred him, it's bad enough that he wants out. Hopefully we will learn more about his past soon.
Chief Conner: You're one of the best interrogators I've ever seen, but there's no quiet room in Sioux Falls is there? It would be a waste of your talents, don't you think?
Julian: I have other talents.
Chief Conner: What we do in this room, Julian is bloody, thankless, but we do it for the good of the company.
Julian: All due respect sir, but I think I've done enough.
Julian realizes now, just like everyone else, that the only way you get out of Spiga is probably toes up, or wandering the Red Zone with your mind wiped. Great options, right?
Julia Ormond was markedly better in this episode, finally showing some emotion. I hope we see more of that going forward: they should really mine more of the mother/daughter dynamic that we saw here, because it really works.
This was by FAR the best episode of the season, but I wonder if they can keep this emotional level going, or will it go back to the boring backstabbing that has mired the show in the muck so far.
