Riverdale Round Table: Evil Runs In The Family

at .

The Blossom family held a memorial to put Jason to rest, Archie tried to balance his music and football careers, and Betty uncovered some disturbing information about her family on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 5.

Below, TV Fanatics Mandy Treccia, Paul Dailly and Justin Carreiro debate the true evil of the Blossom family, Polly's hidden secret, and the latest development in the Jason Blossom murder investigation.

1. We got a closer look into the Blossom family lifestyle. How do you feel about this family now?

Mandy: I felt terrible for Cheryl. And for Jason, too. It makes a lot more sense why he ran away. I want to know what made the parents so cold and awful.

Paul: The family is terrible. It definitely made me think twice about how much I did not like Cheryl. There was a method to her madness and now I can't wait to see her annoy her parents some more.

Justin: The Blossom parents are truly evil. While Cheryl has her moments, you can tell she's someone with a good heart below the surface. I couldn't believe how mean this family is to each other.

2. Was Oscar Castillo (the music mentor) too harsh on a beginner like Archie?

Mandy: Yes. I understand the need to take the craft seriously. But Archie's in high school, so he'll automatically have other things in his life along with music. Oscar came off pretentious rather than helpful.

Paul: I don't think so. Archie needs to understand that the industry he's going into is not going to be easy. He needs thick skin and the character of Oscar served to show us that.

Justin: It's hard to break into the music industry and I like that Oscar gave Archie a dose of reality. However, Archie is a beginner and he has other priorities. Oscar could've been helpful without being rude.

3. Archie and Valerie seemed to be hitting it off. Is this a romance you're excited to see?

Mandy: I'm glad Ms. Grundy is gone. But considering how Archie claimed to feel about her, it seems like he's moving onto flirting with Valerie pretty fast. I'd like to see the show take its time to buildup a romance for Archie.

Paul: I agree with Mandy. It was way too fast to dangle a relationship with Val in front of the viewers.

Justin: It's great to see Archie somewhat moving on. I was never a fan of the Ms. Grundy affair. However, I agree with the others. This is just way too soon after his "big romance" ended.

4. Mr. Cooper revealed a bit of Blossom and Cooper family history. Do you think this will be important later on?

Mandy: Yes. I like that there are so many rivalries between the parents. The kids, for the most part, get along, so it'll be interesting to see how the parental dynamics shape their friendships. It's so messy and soapy.

Paul: Yes. It sure seems like the show wants to go the Dallas route.

Justin: There's a reason this bit of information was revealed. I think the money or personal family struggles could've been one of the reasons why Polly and Jason kept most of their relationship a secret.

5. Jason and Polly were engaged. React!

Mandy: This mystery with Polly becomes more intriguing each week. It's strange to me that Betty would be so clueless when it came to her sister. I hope we get to meet her soon. I don't trust the parents' narrative.

Paul: That was a great twist, but the grandmother really creeped me the hell out.

Justin: This development changes things from what we've learned. If Polly and Jason were engaged, it means she wasn't simply a hookup for Chuck's game but a serious relationship. I still have a feeling their rushed engagement might have something to do with a pregnancy.

6. Do you think Mr. Cooper is involved in Jason's death?

Mandy: At this point, I hope not. All of his actions are screaming suspicious! I hope he's just a red herring. At the same time, it would not surprise me at all given the way he reacted.

Paul: Nope. I think he's doing his own investigation to try and extend an olive branch to the Blossom family. Maybe he thinks he'll get some money out of it.

Justin: I think he did it to protect Polly or the Cooper family in general. We learned a bit about the Cooper vs. Blossom family history. Him destroying the wall and stealing evidence could've been him making sure his family didn't become the main suspects.

Riverdale Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

Every town has one, the spooky house that all the kids avoid. Ours was Thornhill, the Blossom family's mansion, with it's very own graveyard. And trapped within its walls, like some Gothic heroine, was Cheryl Blossom, who's still grieving for her beloved brother Jason. Linked in death even as they were in life.

Jughead

Mrs. Blossom: I told you, Cheryl. No more sleeping in Jason's bed.
Cheryl: I didn't. I was working on the eulogy for JJ.
Mrs. Blossom: Don't bother. You won't be speaking at his memorial. God knows what you'd say. Something to humiliate us?
