The Vampire Diaries Interview: Michael Malarkey Teases Final Episodes

at .

The Vampire Diaries is coming to an end next month, so we got on the phone with Michael Malarkey to discuss what the future holds for Enzo and whether there was a possibility that he would become a human.

The actor opened up about Bonnie and Enzo's journey on The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 11 and whether it would get them one step closer to making a decision about their future together.

Enzo has been part of the show since The Vampire Diaries Season 5 and has cemented himself as one of the most lovable characters on the series.

Read more below about what's to come on the CW hit and what Michael's plans are now that the series is winding down.

TV Fanatic: How do you feel about The Vampire Diaries coming to a close?

Michael Malarky: It's been an incredible experience, and I'm actually really looking forward to what happens next.

The thing I love about being an actor is the opportunity to step into a variety of different shoes, and I feel like I'm ready to immerse myself in another character, so I'm feeling good and positive and optimistic, and I'll miss these people, but I'm looking forward to the future.

What will Enzo be up to on the next episode?

Enzo and Bonnie are on a little road trip to hide that bell in a safe house, and Bonnie is trying to convince Enzo to be a human and to take advantage of his immortality before he takes the cure if that's what they do decide to do.

They are on a little romantic road trip, but also doing, like, a bunch of bucket list hits, so we see Enzo driving a car on a speedway and other kinds of things.

They are full of joy and love. It's all lovely for a bit, and then, you know, obviously, some form of disaster strikes.

Happy Times - The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 11

How does Enzo feel about the prospect of taking the cure and becoming a human?

I think there's probably an element of trepidation to it. If he was a human, he wouldn't be able to protect Bonnie as easily as he can right now. At the same time, I think he wants some semblance of a normal life, so I'm sure it's a double-edged sword kind of feeling for him.

Do you think there's any way Bonnie would become a vampire?

I think they would both agree on the best thing for them to do in any given situation. I'm sure if that seemed like the right thing to do if things were really dangerous, then perhaps they'd do that. I think they very much wanted to make this decision together.

It's Love - The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 11

Do you think Enzo deserves a happy ending?

[laughs] Do any of us? I mean, nobody deserves anything, I suppose, it's that kind of world. But I mean, I feel like he's been through hell and back, so if anybody does, he does.

Is there anything you can tease about the final-ever episodes of The Vampire Diaries?

Yeah, there's going to be a few shockers that happen. There's going to be some love and marriage and all kinds of things. It's going to be an intense ride for the last few episodes for the fans and maybe they should start calling their therapists and booking in advance.

What will you miss most about working on the show?

I'll miss this little friendship circle that we've created with this family here in Atlanta. It's been a wonderful support group. We all love each other and look after each other, and we've kind of wrapped ourselves up in each others lives.

We've had kids while we're here, Zach had a kid, Candice had a kid, I had a kid, so we've very much been with each other through some really integral years in all of our lives.

That's the thing that's kind of sad. You sometimes move on, and you don't see the people you work with as much after you move on, but I hope we do. I wish everybody the best.

How did you feel about your new single, "Scars" being used on The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 8?

Oh, I was thrilled. I was just playing guitar in front of the fire and hanging with Julie Plec and my missus. She heard me play that song and was like, 'What is that song?' From that moment, she had it in her head that it would go in that exact moment in that episode, so I sent her over a demo, and she basically listened to the song and kind of incorporated that with the storyline.

The song and the story kind of informed each other. It was a real stroke of genius on Julie's part. It was a really iconic music moment on the show. There's a few of those per season, and it was one of them. I'm honored that she dug the song so much.

I'm super excited about the new record, as well. If people like "Scars," they're going to love the record.

Do you have any other projects in the works right now?

I am just getting ready to go to L.A. for Pilot season, so I'm reading for stuff and looking at scripts. We'll see.

There's loads of prospective things going on. It's the time of the year when things can get crazy. It's like a feeding frenzy. I'm just going to keep my head down and focus on the craft. See what happens.

Finally, Do you there's a possibility that Enzo could pop up in New Orleans on The Originals at some point?

[laughs] I don't think it would make any sense. He doesn't know any of those people, but if they wanted me to do an episode, I'd be happy to.

Be sure to tune into The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 11 to find out how Enzo and Bonnie's road trip goes and to find out who shows up to try and get the bell. Be here for a full review afterward.

It airs tonight on The CW at 9/8C.
