It has been a while since we were given a "dance it out" scene and we were long overdue. 

There is no time like the present given everything that had transpired with Diane.

We got a healthy dose of humor on Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 19 too, which was a pleasant surprise, given the fact that we were coming off of the difficulty on Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 18.

The hour mostly revolved around Maggie's first day back at the job, but fortunately, it wasn't the only thing we were given this hour. 

You know what I love about Grey's Anatomy? I love when it can acknowledge just how ridiculous it is and when it doesn't take itself too seriously. It can laugh at itself. It gives us, as viewers, license to laugh at just how absurd it can be, too. 

It has been 13 seasons of some of everything imaginable thrown at us. Why not acknowledge it?

That's why I thoroughly enjoyed the opening moments with Amelia and Meredith watching over Maggie as she visited her mother's grave. The two commiserated over their childhoods ripped out of soap operas and graphic novels. Those two have experienced some serious crap. It's laughable in a morbid way.

I loved that they acknowledged the whole "Diane being buried there" thing because I was scratching my head at first. 

It makes sense. She wanted to be near her daughter because she knew Maggie would want to do things like visiting her grave. Did they not have any other family.  Or is this just it? I wonder about that. 

There is a whole show of Maggie being deemed the less "damaged" of the sisters because she had this happy childhood, but we all know that nothing is ever truly as it seems. Everyone has their own stuff. Everyone has their own baggage. 

Amelia: I still don't get it. Why did Diane want to be buried here? She's not from here. It's weird.
Maggie: Maybe so she can be close, so Maggie can do this.
Amelia: What's this? What does she get out of it?
Maggie: Don't ask me.

No one is exempt from dark times or anything else because they maybe didn't experience the same level of darkness as someone like Meredith has. We all have our demons and crosses to bear. Even someone like Maggie has experienced rough times and hardships before this. 

It was still amusing watching Amelia and Meredith bond over just how dark, twisted, and jaded they are. The whole "is this what normal people do? Weird!" thing they had going on had me chuckling multiple times. Plus, it's always nice to see the two of them bond. 

Meredith: I mean, maybe this is what grief looks like when you've lived a whole healthy life. You know, before anything terrible happens.
Amelia: Like watching your father get murdered when you were five?
Meredith: Or like watching your mother bleed out on the kitchen floor.
Amelia: We're more alike than we realized.

How are they just now realizing that they had so much in common? I mean, hello? Witnessing murders, drug problems, suicide attempts, and losing damn near everyone they've ever loved...they have dark and twisty in the bag. 

That's about where the laughs stopped. When it came to the whole "Maggie being the odd-woman out for not being as jaded as her sisters" thing. Because then Maggie spent the rest of the hour being treated like she was fragile and made of glass. 

I hated that. Don't get me wrong; I wasn't fond of the fact that she usurped the case from Nathan. I'm never a fan of when anyone does it. But that's the thing though; everyone does it. 

Everyone always does it. She isn't the first character who threw herself into work after experiencing something traumatic, grieving, etc. So it was offensive and hypocritical that the others questioned her state of mind the way that they did. 

It's one thing if it were one or two people, here and there, but damn near everyone was on her case. The only one that seemed to have faith in her was Nathan. Which makes sense because, he, more than most, knows what it's like to work through grief which is something that never truly goes away. 

Owen: Baby's heart rate is dropping.
Meredith: Well, go down there and do something!
Nathan: No. Just wait.

Even Meredith wavered. Maggie was right; she's always the cheerleader for her sisters, so why couldn't they just back her this time?  

Meredith acknowledged (in another amusing moment) that she performed surgery while dealing with a miscarriage. April through herself into work overseas when she lost her first baby. Owen was operating on people while having PTSD flashbacks. 

It was ridiculous to me that everyone was riding her case the way that they were. Not enough people seemed to care when they had a resident doing a solo surgery on a kid that ended up in his death. 

Maggie, for all of her quirks, flaws or what have you, has always been good at her job. She's laser-focused. As whimsical and quirky as she can come across outside of the OR, she's one of the most competent doctors on the show when she's in her zone. 

She has never been one to make missteps or even let her emotions get in the way while she's operating, which is more than I can say for many of GSM's finest. I didn't feel as if she should take on the case because her reasons were selfish and it was screwed up to waltz in the way that she did when Leo and Jenna spent all their time with Owen and Nathan. 

Maggie: As your family, Dr. Hunt is looking out for you, but you should know his concerns have nothing to do with my surgical skills, do they?
Owen: Of course not.
Maggie: He's worried about me because my mom died recently. And he's worried that I won't be able to work through my personal pain to get the job done, but I can. Or I wouldn't be here.

I did not, however, think she was in any way incapable of getting the job done because she was grieving. I thought the mere thought of that, for a character like Maggie, was bullcrap and I was gritting my teeth in frustration when it was starting to appear like she was choking. 

It was a risky surgery that could have gone awry no matter who did it and their mental state. Then she was in a room with Arizona who was vocal about not wanting her there, and a roomful of doctors (who pushed back and rearranged their surgeries) with their faces plastered to the glass, waiting for her to have a meltdown. 

I mean, come on now. No pressure! 

Maggie: Why couldn't you do your job?
Jackson: Maggie--
Maggie: My mother came to you for help. You said that you could help her. That is the job. So why the hell couldn't you do it?

I was, however, expecting her to lash out at Jackson at some point. Obviously, it wasn't fair, but it was also inevitable. She didn't know all the facts. He also was Diane's doctor, and her friend, and he could take it. 

I LOVE the relationship between Maggie and Jackson. It sort of snuck up on me. It was building up quietly, for some time, and now after all of this, it's so in your face. I adore it. 

In some ways, it seems like Jackson understands Maggie better than the people she lives with. Maggie is an analytical person. She has to see the facts and figures laid out in front of her. She needs to see the science. She likes having all of the pieces so that she can come to the proper conclusion. 

All this time she was walking around grieving for her mother, and she still didn't have all the facts. Jackson giving her her mother's file was the best thing he could have done for her. That and the rest of the things he gave her. 

Maggie: She gave these to you?
Jackson: She didn't come to see me because I was the best. She came here because she knew that she was dying. And you and I, are kinda like family. She figured I would do my best to take care of you and she was right. She asked me to hold onto those until you needed them. I think you needed them.

Even in death, Diane is warming the cockles of my heart, because she did everything she could to guarantee Maggie was surrounded by a strong support system. I imagine she had a similar conversation with Jackson that she did with Meredith. 

She recognized that Jackson is Maggie's family and he would look out for her. Their final scene together was easily my favorite of the night. 

Amelia was the Amelia I like when she was with Meredith and Maggie. She was Amelia I loathe when she was with Owen. There is nothing she could say that could make me understand her reasoning for not going to see Leo and Jenna. 

The couple asked to see her. All she had to do was pop in and say hello. Why is she like this? Why must she be so childish? 

Let me tell you if Brandon Quinn wants to say hello, I would run not walk to him, and I don't run unless someone is chasing me. 

It has been a mighty fine week for the mighty fine Brandon Quinn. Three times he popped up on my TV screen. If you want to see more of his body...ahem...of work, you can sometimes catch him on The Fosters and can definitely catch him on Rebel. 

Now, for this Meredith and Nathan thing. It's just silly. Get together or don't get together but stop jerking around. I'm looking at you, Meredith. 

Meredith using Maggie as an excuse to deal with her feelings for Riggs is ridiculous. Tell your sister. Date Riggs. It's that simple. Maggie doesn't need Meredith hovering around her; there is literally nothing that Meredith can do that would require her to postpone their relationship with Riggs.

That's why I think her flakiness has more to do with her fear of moving on and has nothing to do with Maggie. Arizona hit the nail on the head. 

Also, ouch, Arizona. Think about the filter between your brain and your mouth and then use it. Her childish thing with explaining her relationship with Eliza aside (no, really. If you're looking for a list of all the damns I give about the angst you feel over dating Eliza and keeping it secret, you'll find that my list is blank), I thought her friendship with Nathan was cute. 

Then she basically took a Louisville slugger to his ego with that Derek thing, and I remember why Arizona can sometimes be the worst friend. Just ask Richard. I kid. Not really. 

Arizona: Oh my God! I mean, I understand why you're into her. She's hot. Wait, she likes you?
Nathan: What? I mean, I'm going to try not to be offended at that.
Arizona: No, no, no. It's just that Derek was, Derek was epic for her. They were the great love story. I mean, that girl's heart beat for Derek Shepherd. It just, it never occurred to me that she would ever be with anyone else. He was perfect. He was everything. That man turned her world. It, I spooked you. Don't be spooked.

I love that Richard wouldn't let Miranda off the hook. Good for him. I wouldn't either. She needed to own up to her actions, and she still didn't want to do that without him apologizing first. Whatever. Is this over now? I hope it's over now. 

Additional Notes: 

• Shoutout to Justin Chambers for making good use of his two lines per episode thing he's been on. What has it been, three weeks since he's been a prominent character? Sheesh.  

• If I wanted to drool over the hot doctors or get some juicy gossip, I would hang out at GSM all day. If I actually wanted to be treated? Go to any other hospital around.

• Why do the doctors insist on making disparaging remarks about other doctors in front of patients? Or revealing info they shouldn't be revealing? Stop it.

• Edwards and DeLuca are the best residents they have. Think about that. Then think about the fact that Cross was being misdiagnosed this entire episode. Y'all are going backward.

• Ben deserves a medal for being the straight-man who calls Bailey and Webber out on their bullcrap. Ben might be the MVP of the season. Ben is all of us. Exasperated. Always.
