13 Reasons Why: It's Official! Confirmed for Season 2 at Netflix!

It's not a big surprise, but getting the official word on any renewal is always comforting.

Netflix has given the green light to Season 2 of its social media sensation, 13 Reasons Why.

The biggest change will be behind the scenes, with Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey, who wrote the adaptation and serves as an executive producer on the series, taking over as showrunner for Season 2. Diana Son held the role previously.

Hannah by her locker - 13 Reasons Why

The second season of the groundbreaking drama based on the YA book by Jay Asher will pick up in the wake of Hannah Baker's death and follow the characters as they begin their journeys toward recovery and healing.

If you watched the first season, you know there were already severe repercussions to the events that took place and at least two cliffhangers with very disturbing outcomes.

For those of you who were engaged with what happened with Hannah's parents and wanted to know more of what their journey might entail, executive producer Selena Gomez revealed a video on Instagram that suggests that storyline will continue, as well.

While the series was given an adult rating, it was based on a story aimed at and written about teenagers, so keeping them away from it was highly unlikely.

It would have also done the material an injustice, no matter how severe it becomes at times.

Clay with a Tape - 13 Reasons Why

The subject matter should open up discussion about communication, sharing feelings with parents and not under any circumstance portray suicide as a beautiful way to go.

That latter point might have hit home a little too hard for some parents, who wanted to shield their children from the more disturbing scenes from a series that graphically details bullying, rape, drunk driving and teen suicide. It's not the stuff of Lifetime movies, and it's genuinely frightening.

Instead, after 13 Reasons Why was already airing on Netflix, the network intensified its content ratings in response to the various concerns, including those from mental health professionals.

For those of you who haven't watched it yet or perhaps haven't done so with a parent or your children, I would urge you to open up the discussion before watching, watch together or get involved before the second season.

Alex and Clay - 13 Reasons Why

Good television gives us the opportunity to facilitate conversations with each other that may help us as a group grow and learn from the fictional experiences we witness on the small screen.

Allow our fictional characters to go through things so we don't have to do it ourselves.

The most important thing to take away from 13 Reasons Why is that nothing like what happens to Hannah Baker should ever happen again in real life.

Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford,Kate Walsh, Brian D’Arcy James, Derek Luke, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro and Tommy Dorfman star in the harrowing series.

Are you excited to find out what happens next?
