Scandal BOMBSHELL!! Will Season 7 Be Its Last?!?

at .  Updated at .

Has Scandal set its finale date already?

If sources are telling the truth, they surely have done just that, and it's coming at the finish line of Scandal Season 7. Shonda Rhimes made the decision herself, and ABC accepted it.

ABC is expected to make the announcement at their up front presentation on Tuesday.

A Stranglehold On Olivia - Scandal

When Scandal first took the air by storm, it played out nothing like the show it is today.

Olivia Pope was the best fixer Washington had, but the craziness has quadrupled as the seasons rolled by.

The nature of the series has given it such a fantastical nature that expecting it to run as long as Grey's Anatomy, for example, just wouldn't seem prudent.

Yet seven seasons of the madness and mayhem at the level they've maintained on Scandal and at the level of government they're playing with is more than just a good run.

It's tremendous!!

With just three episodes remaining for Scandal Season 6 to wrap up the current storyline, it's anyone's guess what Rhimes might have considered to wrap up one of the wackiest government storylines ever told on television.

None of this should be a surprise, though.

Not only have fans been chafing in their seats through some of the more bizarre and unexpected moments of Scandal, Rhimes herself has attested the series was one designed with an end in sight.

I feel like there is a finite amount of Scandal to be told,” Rhimes previously told NPR.

“So I know what the end of Scandal will be, and I feel really good about that. And I can see where the end point is. And I don’t think I’m going to change that.”

And Scandal's heyday might just be over.

In its glory days, Scandal Season 4 reached dizzying heights. The premiere pulled in 12 million viewers and a 3.8 rating.

This season Scandal has been hitting series lows and averaging a 1.5 with an average of 5.7 million viewers.

That's still better than many shows on the air today, but the series will not go out on top of the ratings. But by choosing to end Scandal on her own terms, Rhimes can ensure it goes out on a creative high, and that's the right choice to make.

Fitz Needs a Drink - Scandal

ABC President Channing Dungey had left the ball in Rhimes court when asked about the future of Scandal past Season 7 when asked about it earlier this year.

“But I love the show, and I would happily keep the show on as long as she feels that she has creative runway to write the show.”

It's no surprise ABC accepted Rhimes' proposal to end after Season 7.

Fitz is handing over the keys to the kingdom to his ex-wife and she's burdened with the same time of presidency he was of high-office meddling. What comes around goes around.

It all seems rather fitting.

And when there is a definite end in sight, it makes getting there a little more exciting, because you know there is a good plan in place.

What do you think about this development? Are you ready for the sun to set on Scandal? In which direction do you hope Rhimes takes the series for its final season?
