Gotham Season 4: Everything You Need To Know!

at .  Updated at .

Gotham Season 3 took us down some dark paths.

Bruce killed Alfred (then brought him back to life), Nygma killed Oswald (who was then saved by Ivy), Lee turned into quite the bad girl thanks to Tetch's virus (but then was saved by Jim), Jerome returned to terrorize the city, and the list goes on.

So what's in store for Gotham Season 4? Click through the slides to see all news we've gathered on what to expect for the new season.

What are you most excited about?

Gotham returns on Thursday, September 21 at 8/7c on FOX.

If you need to catch up before then, you can watch Gotham online right here via TV Fanatic.

1. Bruce's Journey

Bruce's journey is about to continue on Gotham Season 4. He'll be getting help from Lucius Fox, Alfred will be by his side, and Ra's al Ghul will still have a hand in Bruce's Batman transformation.

With all the new villains about to terrorize Gotham City, Jim Gordon is going to need all the help he can get. It's the perfect time for Batman to make his appearance. Even if he seems a little young, we're all in for David Mazouz's version of the Dark Knight.

2. Gotham Will Get Dark - Very Dark

If you thought Gotham couldn't get any darker, you're in for a surprise.

Alexander Siddig, who plays Ra's al Ghul, said during a recent chat on Gotham's Facebook page that Gotham Season 4 was going to get very, very dark and very, very crazy.

"It's going to go up an octave," Siddig said. "It's going to go up a set of decibels. A notch. Volume 11. It's going to get up there."

3. The Key Art is Amazing...

Gotham released two new pieces of key art that have us more excited than ever for the new season to start. In the first piece, we have a fierce-looking Bruce front and center wearing his cowl. It won't be long before Gotham belongs to Batman.

The tagline for the season was changed from "Dawn of Night" to "A Dark Knight" which tells us that we'll be able to count on Batman assisting Jim Gordon in saving the city.

4. ...And Even More Amazing

In this piece, Bruce is behind Gordon, sort of as a support. Jim may be leading the takedown of criminals now, but we know it will be Bruce's job as Batman in the future. We also love the bats flying off Bruce's cape.

When will he decide to name himself "The Batman"? We can't wait for that moment.

5. Ben McKenzie Wrote an Episode

Gotham tweeted out that McKenzie wrote his first script for the show, and we only have to wait a short time to see what comes out of McKenzie's "twisted mind." His episode will be the fourth of the season. No other details were released, but we're kind of excited!

McKenzie made his directorial debut last season with Gotham Season 3 Episode 16, "These Dark and Delicate Obsessions," which featured some fun scenes between Ivy and Penguin and very dark scenes between Jim and his Uncle Frank.

6. The Scarecrow is Coming...

We've gotten some good looks at the Scarecrow, and he's downright sinister looking. We'll see him on Gotham Season 4 Episode 1 as he starts bringing people's worst fears to life.

Jonathan Crane is the man behind Scarecrow. We saw him last on Gotham Season 1 when he was strapped to a bed screaming in fear at the scarecrow of his nightmares he imagined was attacking him.

He'll be played by Charlie Tahar who played him in the first season. Tahar's other television roles included playing Ben Burke on Wayward Pines and Wyatt on Ozark.

7. ...And So Is Professor Pyg

Just when things seem like they can't get any worse in Gotham, Professor Pyg shows up. He may end up being Gotham's most nightmarish villain yet. Yes, even worse than Jerome.

Otherwise known as Lazlo Valentin, Pyg, who likes to wear a porcelain pig mask, has an obsession with making people perfect.

He uses an identity-destroying drug on his victims and then affixes permanent doll masks on their faces, effectively turning them into "Dollotrons." The guy is a true psychopath. We have to wonder which of our heroes (Jim or the Batman vigilante) will take him down.

Professor Pyg will be played by Michael Cerveris who is best known for his role as The Observer/September on the sci-fi drama Fringe. His other television credits include Amazon's The Tick and The Good Wife.

8. New Faces - Sofia Falcone

Don Falcone daughter, Sofia, will arrive in Gotham to help her father deal with an out-of-control Penguin. She had been running Falcone's operations in the south. She may also be Jim's new love interest (ugh) which is sure to create drama in itself.

Sofia will be played by Crystal Reed, best known for her role as Allison Argent/Marie-Jeanne Valet on The CW's Teen Wolf.

9. New Faces - Cherry

Also joining the Gotham Season 4 cast will be Marina Benedict whose previous TV credits include Prison Break, Flesh and Bone and Torchwood. She'll play Cherry who owns a fight club in the most lawless and dangerous area of Gotham known as The Narrows.

Cherry will come into contact with other characters on the show including Ed Nygma and Solomon Grundy and may become their ally or a very dangerous enemy.

10. New Faces - Alex Winthrop

Bruce will gain a new friend in Alex Winthrop. Played by Benjamin Stockham, Winthrop is the grandson of a museum curator who Bruce runs into while hunting a lead. Hanging with Bruce is sure to lead to trouble. How much trouble? We'll have to wait and see.

Stockham was previously on About a Boy.

11. Solomon Grundy

One of the most exciting developments in the finale of Gotham Season 3 was the reveal that Butch Gilzean's real name was Cyrus Gold who is better known as Solomon Grundy.

Butch was shot in the head by Barbara and left for dead, but miraculously survived. It is a clever way of explaining the memory loss that will happen on Gotham Season 4.

Gotham Executive Producer John Stephens told EW that Butch has "been in a vegetative state at Gotham General, and so to clear up space for more beds, the administrators at the hospital have him dumped in Slaughter Swamp as one does in Gotham."

"So he emerges reborn out of Slaughter Swamp as the character we know as Solomon Grundy.”

One of the first people he runs into is Ed Nygma, but because of his memory loss, he has no idea of their history. That's sure to be a lot of fun and dangerous fun at that!

12. Jim's Journey To Commissioner

Jim will be making great strides towards becoming the GCPD Commissioner on Gotham Season 4. With Batman lite finally making an appearance, it makes sense that Jim will need to fulfill that role.

It's not clear if he will become Commissioner this season, but any steps towards that distinction is a step in the right direction.

Stephens also told EW that Jim going to "cross different ethical lines than he ever did before." It's not surprising to learn that Jim is going to go down another dark path. That seems to be something he has had no problem doing previously.

But since this will be a way darker Gotham, we can only imagine what unethical things Jim will do to try to save the city.

13. A Different Barbara Kean

At the end of Gotham Season 2, it appeared that Barbara was electrocuted and died, but that's not the case.

We knew her character had miraculously survived when actress Erin Richards, who plays Barbara, showed up at San Diego Comic Con earlier in the summer with a shorter and whiter hair.

No details were divulged on how Barbara survived, but the actress has said that the Barbara we'll be seeing this season will very different from the Barbara we've seen in the past.

As you know, Barbara has gone through many transformations. She was a good girl, then a crazy girl and then a crazy bad girl. Seeing a more controlled Barbara will be refreshing.

Part of the reason for her transformation will be because she will be trained by Ra's al Ghul which makes us think that perhaps her resurrection might be coming from the Lazarus Pit.

She's also going to be teaming up with Selina and Tabitha to form a trio of girl power the show so desperately needs.

14. Penguin and The Riddler

On Gotham Season 3 Penguin, with the help of Mr. Freeze, put the Riddler on ice. Penguin is using his unique ice sculpture as a centerpiece for his new club, The Iceberg Lounge.

We know Nygma won't remain frozen for long and based on some of the promos released. He'll escape, and he'll come after Penguin with a vengeance.

Eventually, he's going to come across Solomon Grundy and the two will become fast friends. Penguin needs to watch his back because this new alliance will be dangerous. We're sure of it.

15. Will Lee Return?

Ben McKenzie told Entertainment Tonight in an interview posted on Gotham's Facebook page that Lee "will probably be back." No other details were given, but we bet she'll end up back at her old job with the GCPD.

And once she does return, we know it won't be long before she and Jim get together again. Sofia Falcone, be damned. We all know Jim and Lee can't stay away from each other no matter how toxic their relationship may be.

You have been very useful, and us arrogant physicians have much to learn from a madman like you. But not much.

Professor Strange

Ed: Barbara, do you even remember how amazing you were?
Barbara: I'm still amazing. I just made a choice.
