Grey's Anatomy Round Table: Finally Back On Track!

at .

Grey's Anatomy is back, and it's both familiar and a breath of fresh air.

On Grey's Anatomy Season 14 Episode 1, familiar faces popped up in person and via news articles (still miss you, Cristina), and Megan Hunt made a lasting impression.

Grey's Anatomy Season14 Episode 2 dropped an Amelia bombshell that left viewers reevaluating everything they thought about her recently.

Not only is Grey's Anatomy back, but with the drama, laughs, interesting cases, and new people, it's back to being the show that we loved.

Did the Amelia revelation come as a shock to you?

Stacy: Yeah. it kind of did. I feel like it shouldn't have, but I really didn't see it coming before she volunteered for the study. Once Owen started to question her mental health it occurred to me she might be sick.

Amelia has always annoyed me so much, and I didn't watch Private Practice, so I just figured her impulsive behavior is just the way she is. Here's hoping removing the tumor gives her a personality adjustment.

Amanda: As someone who watched Amelia's journey on Private Practice, I knew she was an emotionally damaged person, but her behavior in this episode really pushed my patience. So I wasn't entirely shocked by the tumor. The second she volunteered, I figured the scan would see something bad.

Paul: I was shocked. Her mood was a little all over the place, so I should have figured it out before it all played out on screen. I cannot wait to see how she deals with it going forward.

What did you think of Megan Hunt? Would you like her to stick around or at least pop back up in the future?

Stacy: I loved her! I was really surprised by how much, to be honest. I was even dreading her return a little because I wasn't sure how I felt about the whole storyline. Normally, new characters have to grow on me. It took a long time for me to like Lexie, Maggie, etc., but she's won me over already. I would definitely like to see more of her.

Amanda: I'm with Stacy, I loved her too. It took all of maybe ten minutes or so for her to win me over, and I think a lot of that has to do with Abigail Spencer. She's just so delightful to watch.

I loved watching the brother-sister dynamic with Owen, and I bought the romantic history she shared with Nathan. While I am not in favor of watching a love triangle play out between her, Nathan, and Meredith, I wouldn't mind if she stuck around for a while.

Paul: Yeah, it's a full house. Megan was a fun addition to the show, and Abigail Spencer was excellent in the role. It would be nice to see her stick around.

How do you feel about the way the Jo and Alex and Jackson and April relationships were resolved?

Stacy: I'm glad they all finally had an honest conversation. April and Jo have been holding in these feelings for so long, and both guys were completely oblivious to their pain and fear.

Alex was able to put Jo's fears to rest, but I'm not sure Jackson and April are in a place yet where they can stop hurting each other, which is why April needs to remove herself from the situation. But, as long as they're open and honest, they might get there eventually.

Amanda: I was thrilled! One of the biggest aspects of last season that bothered me was the unresolved relationships. I'm glad to see Alex and Jo back together, but I'm sure her abusive husband will show up at some point this season. I also hope her brief, but hilarious rant at Andrew means we will never have to see a romantic relationship between those two.

Another couple I just can't get on board with yet is Jackson and Maggie. I don't sense a spark at all between them. Maybe it's because I refuse to jump off the Japril train, but I just can't help it. I think it's best that April moves out, but I don't think anything is resolved yet for them.

Paul: I thought Jo was hilarious in the season premiere, and I liked the way she came to the realization that she could be with Alex because he's not the violent man she thought he was.

Jackson and April do not work well together, so I was glad April stepped up and aired her frustration about the whole thing.

On a scale of 1-10, how much did you like the references to previous characters and seasons?

Stacy: 10! I loved having Teddy back, and Arizona blurting out everything that's happened recently was hilarious. I wish we could have had more scenes with the two of them. I also liked the Cristina reference. We need to get her back for a guest spot sometime.

Amanda: An absolute 10! I always liked Teddy and her friendship with Owen. It's great to see her again. I also loved any time a past character or event got mentioned. This show has been on a long time. Sometimes it's nice to have a callback.

Paul: 10! Grey's seemed to forget its roots for a long time, but this opener successfully threw in some nostalgia while keeping me entertained.

What are your thoughts on Carina DeLuca, her hookup with Arizona, and her research study?

Stacy: It was unexpected and definitely a little random. She popped up out of nowhere and just happens to hit on her brother's roommate?

Her study was obviously just a way to find Amelia's tumor, but it was funny watching her flirt with Arizona while showing her the scans. I think she has potential, and she's definitely better than Eliza.

Amanda: It might just be that the writers wanted to get Arizona past the Minnick drama ASAP, but her hookup was definitely fast. Carina happening upon her brother's roommate was a little eye-roll inducing, but she seems like an interesting character to get to know.

Paul: Carina was colorful, to say the least. I liked that she was there to help Arizona move on, but the whole research study seemed a little out of the left field. Bailey probably let it slide because she was related to DeLuca, but I'm still not sure what her long-term plan is.

Are you surprised that Megan declined Nathan's proposal? What do you think it means for Riggs and Meredith?

Stacy: No, it's not surprising at all. They've been apart for ten years, and she's completely focused on getting back to her son right now. He's her priority regardless of whether or not Nathan has feelings for Meredith, which he obviously does.

I don't blame her for wanting to stay focused on her health and her son and not wanting to get wrapped up in a potential love triangle right now. Let's be honest, none of us really want to see that either.

Amanda: No. Megan seems like an intelligent, strong woman. Getting back to her son is her first and only priority at the moment. It's also hard to pick up where a relationship left off when you've been apart for a decade. If her decline means we can avoid a love triangle, then I am all for that.

Paul: Not at all. She understood that Nathan continued on with his life in the aftermath of everything that happened with her going missing. To some extent, she probably knows she would be setting herself up for disaster by staying with him.

Owen and Teddy reunite

How do you feel about Teddy and Owen's kiss?

Stacy: Like I said, I don't like Amelia and I love Teddy, so I don't hate the idea, but I've always thought they were better off as friends. Obviously, the timing is all wrong and I'm glad Teddy didn't let it go any further.

Amanda: I understood why he went for the kiss, and I understood why she had to put a stop to it. Teddy would probably be the best woman for Owen, but they just can't seem to ever be on the same page.

Owen needs to know about Amelia's tumor before he can decide anything about the future of their marriage. But let's face it, Owen will be by her side once he knows the truth.

Paul: I want Teddy and Owen to reunite, so I was all for it.

What was your favorite scene?

Stacy: There were a lot of great ones. The Arizona/Teddy reunion is definitely up there. I also loved Bailey complaining about her shoes and eventually saying "screw it" and going back to her comfy ones.

Amanda: How can I choose? Every scene with Owen and Teddy, Alex still finding it funny Meredith slept with George all those years ago, and Bailey taking off her heels.

Paul: My favorite scene was Jo standing on the glasses. Her morning was already terrible because she realized that she was going to have to bump into the person every day at the hospital.

What would you grade the premiere and why?

Stacy: I'd give it an A. It wasn't the best episode ever or anything, but it was refreshing after how disappointing last season was. It felt like they were starting to get back on track and hopefully this season will be more entertaining.

Amanda: Definitely an A. If it weren't for a couple tiny things, I would have given it an A+. It might be because I loathed the majority of last season, but this premiere felt like a return to classic Grey's.

Paul: A+. I fell out of love with Grey's Anatomy several years ago. I watched here and there over the last few seasons, and everything I read prior to Season 14 premiering had me excited. It surpassed all of my expectations and I am officially a fan of the show again. It had the perfect mix of humor, drama and medical cases to keep me glued to the screen.
