Lucifer Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Mr. and Mrs. Mazikeen Smith

Well, that was different.

Lucifer Season 3 Episode 3 changed course from its usual Lucifer and Chloe case of the week and handed over the reins to Maze who took her bounty hunter skills to Canada to conduct a mission of her own.

It's always fun to watch Maze in action, and this time was no different, but as much as I wanted to like this hour, I have mixed feelings about it.

Conned? - Lucifer

The whole premise was Maze trying to find herself (again). She wanted to find meaning to her life and to know if she was more than just a heartless demon.

What she learned, in the end, was that even though she doesn't have a soul, she's not the least bit soulless.

I don't know why it took a fugitive for her to finally figure it out. She's shown numerous times that she's more than just a demon.

Saving Dr. Linda's life, being concerned about Chloe, and everything she's shared with Trixie should have been enough to prove to her that she's changed from when she first landed in L.A. with Lucifer. All of it should have given her meaning, but she obviously wanted more.

What Ben Rivers did was help her see that she had everything she was looking for already. She just didn't realize it.

Maze was looking for a challenge when Lucifer suggested she hunt down one of the most wanted fugitives in the world. He told her to let her light shine brighter, that seeking out the bright light would give her what she wanted. Dr. Linda thought if she slowed down she'd learn to appreciate what she already had.

When she finally came face-to-face with Rivers, something switched in her. He wasn't like any bounty she had experienced before. She slowed down and learned to appreciate the hunt.

She let Rivers charm her like he charmed all women. And she wanted to see what it was like to slow down a bit like Linda said, to savor the hunt.

Maze still got her thrills, though. The action scenes with Rivers were great as they always are with Maze. Rivers gave her a good fight, but this fight was different.

Maze was still fierce as ever, but there was more meaning behind it. At this point, she was already feeling something for Rivers. He had touched her deep inside as if she had a soul. And him telling her he didn't think she was soulless further pushed the point home.

If he hadn't, she wouldn't have called Linda to save the guy's life or fluffed his pillow to make him more comfortable. Even Lucifer knew something had changed in Maze.

And it wasn't just Rivers that helped Maze come to realize the truth about herself. She started realizing it when Chloe was constantly calling her to check in on her and update her on their end of the case. Chloe even sent Dan to help Maze out because she cared so much about Maze's safety.

Let's not forget about Dr. Linda who was the first person Maze called when she was in trouble with Rivers. Dr. Linda gave Maze direction on how to save Rivers' life.

There were some fun moments there with Maze drinking the alcohol thinking that's what Linda meant when said get alcohol. It was also cute when Maze sewed a button over Ben's wound.

She cared for him, and under different circumstances, she might have run away with him. But he reminded her she did have roots, she has a family, and though she doesn't have a soul, it doesn't make her soulless.

She proved that her life could be more without all the sex and drinking and fighting.

It's going to be interesting to see how this experience further transforms Maze. Will she give up bounty hunting for something different? Will Lucifer be able to handle the new Maze?

Is he afraid she has changed too much?

Ben told Maze that she will always be hunted and at the end, we saw someone put a file away in a cabinet that had other files on our favorite characters.

Could this be a connection to Sinnerman? Could it be Lt. Pierce keeping a file on everyone associated with Lucifer? If so, why?

While I had mixed feelings, I did appreciate getting to know a different of Maze.It was also nice to have a break from the usual murder case of the week. Still, Maze's search seemed a bit out of place considering everything she did for Dr. Linda at the end of Lucifer Season 2.

What did you think of "Mr. and Mrs. Mazikeen Smith"? Did you like the focus on Maze? Did you like Lucifer and Chloe taking a back seat?

Would you like to see other character-centric episodes like this one? Who do you think had the file on Maze?
