Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9 Review: Reign

at .  Updated at .

Holy cow, what a cliffhanger!

Guys, there have been some EPIC fight scenes on this series, but the battle between Supergirl and Reign on Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9 may be the best one yet!

We've seen Kara struggle before, but she usually gains the upper hand. That didn't happen this time.

World Killer - Supergirl

Rarely do we see Kara bleed without the presence of Kryptonite, so we know this World Killer is no joke. She's arguably the toughest foe Kara has faced.

Now she's left unconscious and fighting for her life while the rest of us have to wait until January 15 to see if she survives.

Just kidding, of course, she survives, but still, it's an exciting cliffhanger, and we have to wait a long time.

We still don't know much about Reign, but her power is insanely strong considering she just "woke up" or whatever. Kara's been playing the part of superhero for a while now, and there were some growing pains in the beginning.

You would think she'd have an advantage due to experience alone, but clearly not.

She also went into battle with some fire in her belly, considering all the pent-up emotions she's been feeling with Mon-El and Irma hanging around the DEO. That coupled with Alex's pep talk, and she should have been golden.

I know that you've been struggling for the past few months, and I have been trying to get you to embrace your humanity, but forget that. Be cold. Be Kryptonian. I don't know why, but this thing really scares me. So, please, be alien.

Alex

But it wasn't enough, not by a long shot. Kara seriously underestimated this Kryptonian.

So how will she defeat her?

I haven't heard any rumblings about a possible Superman return, but calling her cousin in for reinforcements seems like the logical thing to do. Maybe we can have another crossover event, and the rest of Kara's super friends can help her take her down.

Whatever happens, Kara will regroup and come up with a plan, but who knows how much death and destruction will result in the meantime.

Supergirl vs Reign - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9

Reign is on a mission.

She's taking out gang members, and she's even trying to defend Lena by going after her nemesis, Morgan Edge.

I find it funny that Kara is on a gurney close to death, while Edge is perfectly fine thanks to his panic room. I'm going to have to assume that room is lined with serious lead walls, but unless he plans to live in there forever, he may not be long for this world.

If Reign wants him dead, he's a goner.

Of course, none of us will miss him if she does take him out. He's just not a very interesting villain. He's more like a pest or a nuisance than anything else. He only takes up screen time.

James: Hey, so we're alive.
Lena: Yeah, well thank God I was here.
James: You okay?
Lena: It's just my quarterly assassination attempt.

He's there to be a thorn in Lena's side and pop up with attempts on her life every once in awhile. He's like a Scooby Doo villain. No one is afraid of him.

James and Lena Toast - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9

We all knew something was brewing between James and Lena. The holidays are always a good time to make a move. There's the holiday spirit, mistletoe, not to mention lots and lots of alcohol that leads to someone deciding to just go for it.

She is his boss though, so that makes it a little more awkward than just any two friends admitting feelings for each other. In a world full of sexual harassment in the workplace allegations, they should be careful. Lena's lucky James returns her feelings, or that kiss could have been a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I'm not sure how I feel about this relationship, to be honest. I don't hate it, and at least the writers are giving James a real storyline that's not about Guardian, but it also feels like it's moving very fast.

I haven't had a chance to get used to the idea of them together yet, so it might take some time for me to get on board completely.

Holiday Party - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9

Poor Ruby, she has no idea what is happening to her mom, and she is going to be devastated if/when she finds out.

It's hard to tell the way it ended if she's about to discover something is seriously amiss. Could you imagine if Ruby winds up in the middle between her mom and Supergirl, her hero?

If Ruby figures out the truth, would she tell Supergirl that Reign is her mom?

Eventually, Kara is going to find out; the question is when and how.

We also have to keep in mind that Sam/Reign doesn't know Kara is Supergirl yet either, so, for now, I guess the two will still be besties when they're in their human lives?

That's going to make everything so much more complicated when the secret identities finally come out. We know Kara will do everything in her power to get through to Sam, but it would be interesting to see if there's a part of Reign that won't want to hurt Kara.

But what is going to happen to Ruby?

I had a theory awhile back that maybe Alex would end up adopting her if Sam is killed or otherwise no longer fit to care for her. The little moment they shared on the couch just reinforced that theory. Alex is going to make an exceptional mom someday.

Human Friends - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9

How will things end up for Mon-El, Kara, and Irma?

Irma is, of course, excruciatingly pleasant, which only makes things that much harder on Kara. Considering the ship is nowhere near close to repair, they're going to be around for awhile. There are only so many ways this could end.

One way, the ship is eventually fixed, and the two of them return home to their time.

Another is that something happens to Irma and Mon-El stays put.

I can't see a situation in which the happy couple stays permanently because that would just be too devastating for Kara to have to watch every day. I just hope there's no scenario where Mon-El cheats on his wife. No one wants that, and besides, he is completely in love with Irma.

Your turn, what are your theories? Will you be able to wait a whole month until Supergirl returns?

If not, you can always watch Supergirl online to pass the time!

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 9 Quotes

Winn: You probably don't know what Star Wars is.
J'onn: Excuse me? The Empire Strikes Back is the best movie sequel of all time.
Winn: I mean I just love you more and more each day.

Kara: Okay, come and get your egg nog!
Alex: Uh, yeah, but be warned, this is not your grandmother's recipe. Oh, this is highly potent, intoxicating deliciousness.
