The Resident (8.8 million/2.7 rating) debuted well for Fox out of a lower than usual NFC Championship (36.5 million/11.7 rating).
The only worrying factor is that the new medical drama started with a 3.3 rating but slumped to a 2.1 rating by the second half.
The numbers will be subject to more adjustment than usual, so it could rise a few tenths in the final ratings.
However, the true test will come tonight when the show debuts in its regularly scheduled time slot.
Reviews for the show have been mixed thus far, but could it emerge as an unlikely hit?
The last time a Fox drama aired out of the NFC Championship, it was The X-Files. That show managed a 6.1 rating out of a 15.7 rating game.
Elsewhere, America's Funniest Home Videos (4.1 million/0.8 rating) and Shark Tank (3.8 million/1.0 rating) took a hit against increased competition.
