There may be more stories left to tell in Mystic Falls after all.

Just one year after The Vampire Diaries came to a close, and months before The Originals comes to a close, The CW is looking to add another entry into the vampire-inspired franchise.

There have been rumblings for months now that Julie Plec was working on another series in the franchise, but there was little confirmation.

Until now.

Welcome, Alaric - The Originals

According to Deadline, The Vampire Diaries veteran Matt Davis will reprise his role as Alaric Saltzman if the series goes ahead. Davis first appeared on The Vampire Diaries Season 1 and appeared right up until the series finale last year.

He subsequently appeared on The Originals Season 4 in a guest-starring role and is expected to appear in the upcoming final season.

If you watched The Vampire Diaries online, you would know that Alaric created a school for the young and gifted at the close of The Vampire Diaries Season 8

Hope Mikaelson joined the school at the close of The Originals Season 4 in an attempt to hide well away from the villains who were out to get her.

In turn, she could harness her powers and use them for the greater good instead of being unable to control them. The potential offshoot would continue the storyline in Mystic Falls at the school.

As such, Danielle Rose Russell will also star on the new series as Hope Mikaelson aka the daughter of Klaus and Hayley.

Aria Shahghasemi, Quincy Fouse, Kaylee Bryant and Jenny Boyd are also said to be attached to the project.

Danielle Rose Russell Attends Premiere

The potential series will not film a standard pilot and will instead use footage from The Originals Season 5 to create a presentation for The CW.

This means The CW has a record ten pilots in contention for the 2018-2019 season on the network.

Helping their chances is the news that The CW will be expanding to six nights of programming in the fall.

All things considered, a new series about the magical aspect of things as opposed to the vampires may well be the way forward for the franchise.

While The Vampire Diaries faded into oblivion near the end, The Originals is going out while it is still a creative force. The fate of this new series likely rests on how well received the final season the series is.

Vampire Diaries Quotes

Dear Diary, a chipmunk asked me my name today. I told him it was Joe. That lie, will haunt me, forever.

Damon: You know what they are? Children. Like lighting a candle's going to make everything OK, or even saying a prayer. Or pretending Elena's not going to end up just like the rest of us murdering vampires. Stupid, delusional, exasperating little children. And I know what you're going to say: 'It makes them feel better, Damon.' So what? For how long? A minute, a day? What difference does it make? Because in the end, when you lose somebody, every candle, every prayer is not going to make up for the fact that the only thing you have left is hole in your life where that somebody that you cared about used to be. And a rock with a birthday carved into it that I'm pretty sure is wrong. So thanks, friend. Thanks for leaving me here to babysit. Because I should be long gone by now. I didn't get the girl, remember? I'm just stuck here fighting my brother and taking care of the kids. You owe me big.
Alaric: I miss you too, buddy.
