The Originals Season 5 Episode 6 Review: What, will, I, have, left

This season of The Originals is starting to make me wish the show just called it quits last year.
Never has a single hour of a TV show infuriated me quite as much as The Originals Season 5 Episode 6 did. From the poor pacing to the convenient nature of the arc with Greta, Roman and Antoinette, to the big death we all saw coming, it was a hot mess.
If you read my reviews regularly, you will know that I love this show and the show that came before it, but I'm starting to fall out of love with it.
I was surprised we got to see Phoebe Tonkin again. I thought for sure we would be getting an off-screen death because it's not like Hayley has been given much to do on the final season aside from being kidnapped twice.
I appreciate wanting to branch out and switch things up, but to off a character this close to the end of the series was very reminiscent of Tyler Lockwood's death on The Vampire Diaries Season 8. It seemed thrown in there merely to shock the audience as opposed to advance the plot.

It must have hurt Hayley a lot to see that Elijah was fighting against the Mikaelsons in her final moments before sacrificing herself. The reaction from her upon realizing he was even in the house was hopeful, but all of that was destroyed in one fell swoop.
Greta is a master manipulator, and if there's one positive to take from Hayley's death, it's that she took Greta down with her.
As for Roman, expect him to be dispatched by Klaus at the top of The Originals Season 5 Episode 7. Yes, it's finally on, and it's probably going to be a high-stakes fight to the finish line now.
It was obvious Roman had his doubts about what Greta was up to and what made it even more annoying was that he genuinely thought about saving Hope and Hayley after speaking with Antoinette.
Oh yes, we finally got some intel on Antoinette, and she may still be a good character after all. She's weary of Greta, and that's a good thing. It proved that she did not know nearly as much as Roman did about what was going on.
Still, it doesn't explain why Antoinette and Elijah really met all those years ago, so there's the possibility that Antoinette is going to emerge as the true villain in a bizarre scene about how she hates the Mikaelsons.
I want to believe that she's a good person, but nobody is really who they seem on supernatural dramas, as evidenced by Roman just one episode before.
As much as I love Caroline Forbes, she felt very out of place in this episode. It felt like she was only thrown in there to remind viewers that, at one point, a romance was on the cards for her and Klaus.
It's pretty darn obvious this show is going to end with them together with their own form of happiness, so I could have done without the cheesy one-liners about the past.
The biggest hurdle for the family now is going to be rising from the ashes. No pun intended, but how will Klaus ever manage to trust Elijah again ... even if he gets his memories back?
Scratch that: How will Elijah forgive himself? This family is going to be more fractured than ever before, and it's scary to think about what's going to come next for them.
Will Elijah even like Antoinette with his memories back? There are so many questions and so little answers. The second half of the season better knock it out of the park.
Did anyone else forget Declan even existed? I mean, his accent is to die for, but his character had very little substance in the narrative ... until now.
He made a great point when it seemed like everyone had just forgotten all about Hayley. He was hurting, and I loved that Vincent opted to spare him from a life of knowing the truth after realizing he was related to the dearly departed Camille O'Conner.

The biggest takeaway from that scene at the graveyard is that Vincent thinks Cami's life was robbed from her thanks to the supernatural world, and he wanted to spare Declan the burden of knowing anything about it.
It was a classy move because Vincent's meeting with Ivy had actually made him think about things as opposed to shutting Freya down.
That said, does anyone seriously think that Declan will be in the dark for much longer? He's not going to settle until he learns the facts about Hayley's death, and more importantly, why her family seemed fine about her being missing.
Other tidbits from the episode:
- Aside from the cheesy one-liners, I was ecstatic that Caroline managed to get through to Klaus. We needed to know more about his struggle over the years to keep his distance from his family.
- Is Stephen Krueger also a "Guest Star" this season? He keeps disappearing.
- How long will it be before Vincent and Ivy get together?
