Roswell New Mexico: First Look at Upcoming CW Reboot

at .

If it's a reboot, you know you're in the right place.

It's still 2018, and you haven't taken a time machine back to the '90s.

Whether that will be a good experience or a bad one for you will depend on your perspective, so let's break down what Carina Adly Mackenzie will be writing for her version of the iconic Roswell, now called Roswell New Mexico.

The characters remain the same, with Liz (nor Ortecho, as in the books) falling for Max.

They are 10 years post high school, though, when they reconnect and Liz starts to put the pieces together that Max, also a local sheriff, may be more than your average hot high school crush.

Additionally, Liz is the daughter of undocumented immigrants. There is no mention of her status, but since it's noted in such a way, we can assume she was born in the United States and is a citizen.

I mention it because it seems to be one of the many modern-day issues Mackenzie wants to bring to the forefront via the writing. Tackling tough issues is the reason for removing the high school setting, Mackenzie noted at an off-site panel during Comic-Con, as well as Liz's parents' immigration status.

Mackenzie also noted, "I want this show to feel like smart conversations with smart people who aren't on the same side of the issues all of the time," indicating she's willing to write an open discussion rather than preach to her audience.

That's admirable.

It's also impressive that Mackenzie's non-sanctioned panel included about 100 guests who she recruited to the event that was moderated by Aisha Tyler.

What remains the same about Roswell New Mexico in comparison to Roswell is that Max, Isobel (a casting homage to original star, Katherin Heigl), and Michael have been living together and working hard to be the humans they need to be to survive on earth.

Now fans only have to determine if they're up for the challenge of another reboot, this time more than an average love story.

Jeanine Mason (Grey’s Anatomy) stars as Liz Ortecho while Nathan Parsons (True Blood) is Max.

Other cast members include  Michael Vlamis (New Girl) as Michael, Tyler Blackburn (Pretty Little Liars) as Alex Manes, Michael Trevino (The Vampire Diaries) as Kyle, Heather Hemmens (If Loving You Is Wrong) as Maria, and Lily Cowles (BrainDead) as Isobel.

The series will be written by Carina Adly Mackenzie (The Originals) while Julie Plec (The Originals, The Vampire Diaries) will both direct and executive produce.

The CW Quotes

Alice: These diaries are your past, and your past is crushing you. Edgar says that...
Betty: What, Mom? What does some guru who’s running a heaven’s gate commune for pregnant runaways and wives of serial killers have to say about my diaries?
Alice: We know that you look down on the Farm, Betty. But, Edgar has done nothing but help me. He’s encouraged me to embrace everything that I was ashamed of and become the best version of myself.

Veronica: What's happening out there? Do we know? Is it about me?
Jughead: I have a strong inkling, and no. Also, I'd let it go.
Veronica: Yes, but you're you and I'm me. You do you, girl. I'll be back.
[She leaves]
Kevin: What was it like before she got here? I honestly cannot remember.
