Shades of Blue Season 3 Episode 5 Review: The Blue Wall

at .

While Harlee and Wozniak were breaking down the blue wall on Shades of Blue Season 3 Episode 5, Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta have been crushing every scene this season.

God, I'm going to miss this show when it's over. Someone tell me again why it has to end?

As much as I want to complain, I can't because they are giving us such heart-pounding drama with every new installment.

Let's start with the Intelligence Unit pulling over Kristina.

Behind Bars - Shades of Blue Season 3 Episode 5

Bennett and Phelps were expectedly creepy, but there were two twists thrown into this scene.

First off, Kristina lied about her study group. She told her mom it was for chemistry but she told the police it was pre-calculus. Was there even a study group at all?

Second, that the pills were really Kristina's. When they found them in her bag I automatically assumed that Bennett planted them, but I was wrong.

I'm surprised Kristina even tried the, my friend left the drugs in my car, line of bull with Woz, but I suppose she is still a teenager.

That entire situation had to be difficult for Woz on several levels. If Ramsay will use Kristina to stop Harlee, he'll definitely follow through on his threats against Nate. Family obviously means nothing to the man. He has no boundaries.

Ramsay's "Girls her age OD all the time," had more than one meaning. It was certainly a threat to Kristina but it was also a dig about Wozniak's own daughter, Annie, dying of an overdose at age 19.

Annie Wozniak - Shades of Blue Season 3 Episode 5

Even the hint that Kristina could head down that road must have sent shock waves through Woz's heart because, for all of his faults, he loves Harlee and Kristina.

Thankfully, Kristina came clean with Harlee about the Adderall. Now Harlee has to help her get off the stuff. Although it's easy to say that Kristina should know better, many adults make the mistake of thinking it's just a couple of pills and they can handle it.

It's easy to forget that Kristina is a 16-year-old kid who has been through more trauma than most adults will ever have to handle, and Harlee handled her confession about as well as any parent could...

You coming to me, owning up like this, takes courage. Look, baby, I want you to know that you can always come to me for anything no matter what. If you're drowning I will throw you a life jacket, I will jump in the water with you because that's my job.

Harlee

But Harlee had more problems than she even knew. Was the guy watching her in the van from the Intelligence Unit, the cartel, or someone else entirely.

Whoever he was, Stahl decided there was room for only one stalker on that block, but now I fear he'll use the guy's body to set up Harlee in some way.

And who would have guessed that Ramsay was in bed with a cartel? That's taking corruption to a much darker level.

As much as I wanted to feel sorry for Loman, he definitely let himself walk right into that trap. With everything going on, did he really think some beautiful woman in the hospital just started flirting with him out of nowhere and then invited him to her hotel room within the hour?

Loman Gets Set Up - Shades of Blue Season 3 Episode 5

Loman was thinking with a body part much lower than his brain and it damn near got him killed, and Loman is one of the more stable members of this team.

Tess would probably follow Woz off of a cliff, but Espada has begun to question whether Woz is making things better or making them worse.

And then there's Tufo. The way Tufo cradled his injured brother while begging Harlee and Espada to get an ambulance was heart-wrenching.

Tufo was riddled with guilt over not stopping his brother from getting involved in Wozniak's operation. He's beating up on himself and he may never trust Woz again, at least not in the way he once did.

Their Shades of Blue quote while donating blood spoke volumes...

Tufo: How'd you end up down here, Woz? A couple of wrong turns on your way to the greater good?
Wozniak: More than a couple, my friend. More than a couple.

When Harlee went after Bennett, I knew Woz was going to try and stop her and I wasn't sure where any of it would lead.

Wozniak believes in the sanctity of the blue wall, but he also believes in the greater good, and in backing his team. So when Bennett couldn't keep his mouth shut and pushed it too far, he gave Harlee the nod to arrest Bennett for Nava's murder.

Harlee: We will meet again.
Bennet: Smart girl. He gave up too. Cried like a bitch.

Woz had Harlee's back but will anyone else in the NYPD back his crew? My guess is that Harlee will eventually turn to Verco for help because if the Intelligence Unit can murder and make evidence disappear at will, she can't possibly take them down alone.

Even if Harlee and Wozniak live through this, will they still have careers and be walking free when it's all over?

Taking On the Unit - Shades of Blue

As much as I don't want this story to end, I can't wait to find out how it does.

We all need a purpose, Tufo, without it we're just blood and bone.
