Taking the High Road - The Good Place

Aside from flashbacks, The Good Place has always taken place in the afterlife. The whole premise of the show relied on that fact seeing as our main characters' lives on Earth obviously ended with their deaths.

The end of The Good Place Season 2 changed everything when Eleanor and the rest of her friends were resurrected by the judge and plopped back on Earth for a second chance. Despite being through hundreds of different reboots, we've never experienced anything quite like this.

With the very basis of the show altered, the real question is, "where do we go from here?"

Although there is a significant amount of time jumps over the first four episodes, the premiere picks up right where the Season 2 finale left off. Just like the rest of the reboots, Eleanor goes to Chidi for help to become a better and more ethical person.

Eleanor and Chidi - Season 3 - The Good Place

As always, Eleanor and Chidi's connection is the driving force of just about everything. Whether these two were friends or more, it was their relationship that helped make both them and those around them better.

But these two have never had it easy, and it seems like this season they'll have a few roadblocks (and love interests) standing in their way.

Despite the ups and downs Eleanor and Chidi face throughout the series, it's hard not to see how perfect these two are for each other.

Although they weren't actual "soulmates" like Michael set them up to be, it seems like he may have accidentally stumbled onto the perfect pair. Now we just need this version of Chidi and Eleanor to realize it.

Eleanor and Chidi aren't the only two whose lives on Earth we get to see. We also get a glimpse into what Jason and Tahani have been doing over the past year, and they've both been on quite interesting paths.

While Jason ends up pursuing a new passion, Tahani seemingly finds a way to get away from her sister and the public eye. And it's not at all what you'd expect.

Tahani - Season 3 - The Good Place

Meanwhile back in the afterlife, Michael and Janet will stop at nothing to get Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani into the real Good Place. Michael's constant persistence and the lengths he will go to to save his friends is a big part of the new season.

Season 3 makes it hard to believe that there was a time in Michael's life devoted to torturing his newfound friends. Now, there's nothing more important to him than making sure they're happy.

Although Michael was only permitted to go back to Earth once, his constant monitoring of Eleanor's progress forces him to break the rules and continuously intervene.

Throughout their observations, both Michael and Janet come to the conclusion that their friends make each other better people.

They are then posed with the question: how do we get all four of them back together?

Michael and Janet - Season 3 - The Good Place

Of course, by meddling in the judge's trial Michael and Janet are putting their safety at risk. Even if they manage to help Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani, there's no telling what the judge will do to any of them if she finds out what's really been going down on Earth.

The judge isn't the only person our characters have to watch out for. In fact, Shawn and the rest of the demons are not happy that Michael betrayed them for Eleanor and her friends.

Not only did Michael lie about the Good Place reboots, but he also led the gang to the judge and with the help of Janet, escaped the demon's custody when he was finally caught.

As we've seen in the past, Shawn has quite the temper, and you do not want to be on his bad side. (Not that he really has a good side to be on anyway.)

With more than one opposing force and no one Earth who actually realizes what's at stake, it's going to be harder than ever for the gang to achieve their goals. But they've faced the impossible before, so who's to say they can't face it again?

Overall, The Good Place seems to be going in a fun, new direction. The show at its heart has always been a comedy, and this season is no different.

You'll be laughing your ass off one minute and find yourself frightened for the characters' lives in the next. As it has shown in the past, The Good Place really can accomplish both.

The Good Place Quotes

There really is an afterlife. I can't wait to have breakfast with Kant, and lunch with Michel Foucault, and then have dinner with Kant again so we can talk about what came up at breakfast!

It's a rare occurrence, like a double rainbow, or someone on the internet saying, "You know what? You've convinced me I was wrong."
