The Young and the Restless Shocker: Doug Davidson OUT!

at .  Updated at .

The Young and the Restless is saying goodbye to a beloved character.

Doug Davidson has shocked fans of the series by confirming he's out of the show after forty years.

A fan questioned whether he had been let go from the series after rumors swirled online that he had been fired.

"They haven’t let you go, have they?” said the fan.

"It seems so,” said Davidson in response.

Shortly after the news broke, the actor chatted with and opened up about what went down.

Davidson admitted to the site that his contract was not renewed in January and that he went on to appear in a recurring capacity only until “they had new people in place.”

While it's fair to assume that being a recurring cast member means he could return down the line, Davidson does not seem to think that's the case.

“I have only two shows that haven’t aired,” he added, “and no [air] dates. So, as far as I know, I am gone.”

Davidson first appeared as Paul on the veteran comedy in 1978, a bad boy with a heart.

The character is a fan-favorite, so it's difficult to imagine the fans being impressed by all of this, especially considering the star has not been told when or if his exit will be addressed on-screen.

It's a bad move to get rid of a character who is still one of the show's most memorable. If the show was really moving in a different direction, one would think they would want to promote the departure of the character.
