Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Six Paintings, One Frame

Magnum P.I. just keeps getting better and better!

Magnum does his best James Bond impression on Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 4, but his little stunt to test an art collector's security system makes him a prime suspect when the art is stolen, and the collector turns up dead!

We all know Magnum isn't a murderer or a thief, but the circumstances sure did make him seem suspect, didn't they?

James Bond to the Rescue - Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 4

It wasn't a surprise when Katsumoto pulled Magnum in for questioning. Even though the detective probably knew Magnum was being set up, he had to be thorough and investigate all possibilities.

Still, while it seemed that Katsumoto had warmed up to Magnum on Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 3, he quickly revealed his real thoughts about Magnum and private investigators in general.

I don't know you Magnum, so I don't know how dumb you are. What I do know is that every P.I. I've ever met is a bottom feeder that can't be trusted.

Katsumoto

Magnum -- a bottom feeder? I think not, but Katsumoto wasn't kidding around.

He wasn't under arrest, and it got pretty intense between those two in those few short minutes, but Magnum being adorably smart ass with Katsumoto as he walked out of the interrogation room isn't going to earn him any points in the future.

No Cuffs - Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 4

Katsumoto seems like the type of guy who's going to file that away somewhere in the back of his brain. He'll be better prepared the next time he has to pull Magnum in for questioning.

Higgins showed her unwavering support for Magnum from beginning to end. She knew Magnum would never do what Katsumoto suspected him of doing, but it might be because Higgins doesn't think Magnum is smart enough to pull off such a heist.

James, Magnum is many things, an uncultured man child, a lazy freeloader, a terrible driver, but he is not a thief, and he is definitely not a killer.

Higgins

Yet, she did seem impressed when she learned how he breached Candler's security system to get into the gallery. If she would've done it the same way he did, then he did a good job.

Higgins was quick to help Magnum with the case once again. This time she had a personal interest in the case because Candler was a friend of hers, but even if he weren't, she would have jumped on the chance to be part of Magnum's investigation.

He always knows where to turn when he has an impossible puzzle to solve, and Higgins didn't disappoint when he gave her the locked cell phone.

Magnum also has to realize that even though Higgins might insult him (in jest, perhaps), the woman has his back at all times.

She's as trustworthy as TC and Rick, and she's not doing it because Robin Masters told her too.

Suddenly Thomas Magnum has art knowledge. Surely, it's a sign of the apocalypse. Perhaps I should pray.

Higgins

She has a certain respect for Magnum. It wouldn't be surprising if she did her own investigation of him before he arrived at the estate.

She wouldn't have just relied on Masters' stories. She would have dug deeper.

Magnum as James Bond - Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 4

There's no doubt Higgins does and says things to get Magnum to react. She'd be disappointed if he didn't respond the way he does to her, but he's also keenly aware that she's doing it.

The banter between them is incredible and gets better every week. Whoever cast Perdita Weeks and Jay Hernandez in their roles deserves an award because that person nailed it.

Although I saw it coming, I almost fell over when she helped him tie his tie before they headed to Candler's funeral. It was the best Higgins and Magnum pre-romantic moment yet.

Magnum is irresistible. Higgins is irresistible. They are a match made in heaven.

But back to the case for a quick moment. It wasn't hard to figure out that the flirtatious Tracy was involved in the heist and murders, but Chen ended up being somewhat of a surprise.

The Art World - Magnum P.I.

I love when women get to show their badass sides, villain or not, and it was great to see Tracy try to fight Magnum off even if she didn't get too far with the butcher knife.

TC and Rick got a lot more screen time this hour as they tried to find leads for Magnum about the stolen art, and in the process, we learned some fun stuff about TC.

Not only did he minor in art history, but he also took dance classes!

Rick Questions Magnum - Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 4

Rick and Magnum couldn't believe TC never shared that with them before, but who can blame the guy for not offering up that bit of trivia about himself in POW camp?

What other secrets is TC hiding? What about Rick and the others? I want to know more.

Magnum P.I. better get an order for more episodes sooner rather than later. I'm all in for watching several seasons of team Magnum on the case.

Tell me again what you want me to do? I wasn't listening before.

Rick

When it comes to art, I'm more of a Dogs Play Poker kind of guy.
