Legacies Round Table: A Worthy Succesor to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals?

at .

The Salvatore School for the Young and the Gifted is filled with possibilities.

On Legacies Season 1 Episode 1, the school was changed forever by the arrival of Landon Kirby.

Below, TV Fanatics Justin Carreiro, Celester Mejia, and Paul Dailly discuss the new series.

Is Landon really a supernatural being, or is there another reason why MG's compulsion didn't work?

Justin: I think he is, but it's probably a new take on the whole supernatural/mortal twist. My guess would be that he's a special human that was born with the ability to overcome the supernatural effects, like vampire abilities, spells or the werewolf bite. It's a guess, and it might be a complete stretch.

However, that would be something new to the TVD universe.

Celester: When you share the same universe as The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, it's safer to assume that no one's a human.

I wouldn't blame it on MG because what he said was true: compulsion is the most basic trick for vampires. Even newly turned vamps can do this without a problem.

For now, and towards the future, I'd stick to my guess and say that he actually is a supernatural being.

Help Me, Please! - Legacies Season 1 Episode 1

Paul: I was so sure he was going to be the Matt Donovan of Legacies, but with Zach Roerig slated to appear on Legacies Season 1, I do believe he's a supernatural being.

However, I expect him to differ from the other beings we've already met in the franchise.

What are your first impressions of the school?

Justin: The school reminded me a lot about the school in X-Men, except that the students are more scandalous and tend to break the rules more.

Everyone is so confident about their abilities, and they love showing it off. On the other hand, it's still a high school and the groups naturally go into cliques. Typical teen drama setting.

Celester: I would agree with Justin with it reminding me about the school for mutants, but less on the technology aspect. And, it makes sense, especially because X-Men leans more towards sci-fi while Legacies is all about the supernatural.

The school was amazingly stuffed with good things--parties, fine but replaceable China dinnerware sets, and varied uniform colors and designs among many things. I can't help but wonder who are their investors because I'd like to get them on my speed dial.

Laying Down the Law - Legacies Season 1 Episode 1

Paul: I loved all the easter eggs that were thrown in there. It made me pay so much attention to the surroundings that I never paid as much attention as I should have to the dialog.

Hope has issues with letting people into her life because, well, they either turn out to be villains or die on her. What was different about Landon?

Justin: Honestly, it had to be because of a teen crush. She wanted to get close to him, and she thought she could trust him.

Celester: I wouldn't even call it a teen crush. I mean, she's a teenager, but she's lived more experiences in life than most of the character here has.

The thing about Landon is that he pushes himself towards Hope while Hope was pushing him away.

That push and pull trick is not something that can be done in a long run and I'm happy that the writers of the show were able to put it in immediately without having us wait for another week.

For the first time, someone entered Hope's life who pushed himself towards her when no one else tried harder. Plus, he was good-looking, for crying out loud. Hormones are hormones, no matter what species you are.

Getting Out of Dodge - Legacies Season 1 Episode 1

Paul: Hope bonded with Landon on The Originals Season 5 Episode 12, but she must have liked him a lot to help him out with the Mystic Falls High School bullies, so there was a sense of vulnerability from him.

Also, his world was falling apart around him when Rafael was taken into the school. Hope's world similary fell apart years earlier, so she felt sorry for him.

Which character did you like best and why?

Justin: I haven't picked a favorite yet. I'm still getting used to a lot of the new additions and the setting of the school to decide between my likes and dislikes. Hope is still one of my favorites, and I do like the drama she has with the twins. But, I'm going to wait an episode or two before I fully commit.

Celester: For now, it's a tie between Hope and Landon. The moment we were introduced into the mystery of Landon Kirby and his history with Hope Mikaelson, there was instant chemistry between the two.

Legacies: Steven McQueen to Reprise The Vampire Diaries Role

It was something that was lacking when they showed up in The Originals. They were cute there. Here, they were sort of epic, and the deepness their conversations had was something to be appreciated.

Paul: Hope, but that's only because she's the most developed character right now. There wasn't one character I didn't like, and that's a good thing.

Matt Donovan, Is That You? - Legacies

Were you glad Matt Donovan was included?

Justin: Yes! The TVD universe (or whatever name it officially is) has many layers to it, and multiple characters that are interwoven into the story.

I'll always appreciate an update about one of the characters. Plus, Matt never got the attention he truly deserved.

Celester: Yes, but I was sad that he was there to talk about another incident. If it isn't a gas leak, it's a chemical spill.

I'm happy I'm not the town's sheriff because it sucks to create an out-of-this-world lie to make its folks unsuspecting.

Paul: Yes, the nods to the other series are what hooked me on this show, to begin with, so I can't wait to see how the sheriff tackles whatever supernatural events occur.

Grade the series premiere!

Justin: B+. Legacies was fun, upbeat, and the return to Mystic Falls was long overdue. However, a lot was going on in the opening hour to get everyone caught up to the story that started on The Originals. I would've preferred if there was some breathing room.

Celester: A+. I'm not even kidding. I'm hooked to it. It had the same vibes its predecessors had, but it felt better.

There was darkness about the show, but it wasn't the focus. It was a little lighter than TVD and TO, but they dig a little deeper as well. If I hadn't seen TVD and TO, I'd still watch the show.

Paul: A. It was excellent and way better than I thought it was going to be! It successfully kicked off a new mystery, and it was clear there was a lot of story to be told.

Legacies Season 1 Episode 1 Quotes

Alaric: Cheater!
Hope: You should really get a vampire to start doing my training. You're getting a little old for me to break your human bones.
Alaric: How dare you.
