Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Tearin' Up My Heart

Damn, this show is not messing around.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3 kicked the murder mystery into high gear as Liz went on a mission to find proof about what happened to her sister, and it resulted in another wild episode of this new sci-fi drama.

Getting Close - Tall - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3

Max allowing Liz to run tests on him is probably the dumbest thing he could do, but he's so blinded by love that he's continually allowing his and his siblings' lives to be put on the line.

I can't fault Liz for going postal on Max.

He lied to her, and she knows an alien was involved in her sister's murder.

With three aliens accounted for and Max one of them, he's going to be high up in the list of suspects.

The scene with the testing was particularly telling. Even though Liz knew it was wrong, there was still an attraction there between her and Max.

Max's comment about his heart racing was corny as hell, and I laughed a little when Liz broke the eye contact with him.

Am I a horrible person? Maybe. But Max chose to play with fire by lying, so he should be able to handle the consequences of his actions.

Liz: Your heart's racing.
Max: It's not racing because I'm scared of you

The love letter was the biggest surprise of "Tearin' Up My Heart."

That was the moment I legit screamed at the screen because I thought Max was seriously in love with Rosa at one point. The execution of this show is terrific.

Liz Finds a Clue - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3

Now that Liz knows Max is head over heels in love with her and has been for his entire existence, it should give Liz some food for thought as the mystery deepens.

It was cute that Max wanted to shield Liz from any more terrible memories of her sister, but I can't help but think he and Liz would be in a better place if he were just honest with her from the get-go.

It was only a matter of time before Liz told Kyle about Max being an alien.

I didn't expect it to happen so soon, but then again, I didn't expect Kyle to tell Jesse that their little arrangement was over.

Kyle was all about trying to prove Max's guilt on this installment, and Michael Trevino plays the role of the jealous jerk very well.

Kyle was blindly following Jesse's order, presuming that everything Jesse said was right.

Kyle and Max are worthy adversaries for one another, but I'm getting the feeling they'll unite to find the killer before long. A crimefighting duo consisting of Liz, Max, and Kyle could make for a great little arc.

Jesse: You said your patient, the one with the handprints is still alive.
Kyle: Very much so. Is it possible that aliens aren't the enemy of humanity?

Hopefully, the show does not try to kick off a love triangle between them. It's a great little cover story for why Kyle was digging into Max's past, but it should remain just that.

Kyle and Liz - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3

That being said, the power outage in town is going to lead right to Max, and I bet Liz is going to come up with some scientific reason about why Max was not involved as a cover story.

The drive-in cinema and the event Isobel hosted was a perfect way to make all the paths collide. It highlighted that Isobel is struggling with what happened to Rosa. It's bizarre that she's seeing visions of her when she tries to control Liz's mind, but it benefits the mystery very well.

The town has created its own narrative and is painting Rosa as the villain. It's easy to blame things on the local troublemaker, but there's still too much about her final night alive that we don't know.

Jesse: Glad you can spare some time.
Kyle: Intervals. I have 30 seconds.

There was something very off about Isobel's reaction during this hour to Rosa confronting her.

The only thing that's crossing my mind here is that Isobel knows more than Max, and she's desperately trying to make her brother think she knows little.

Caught - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3

It could also explain why she was all about the mind control ten years ago. I want to believe Isobel is an innocent bystander, but I genuinely have no clue which way this show is going to go.

What I did enjoy was the layers being pulled back on Isobel regardless of whether she's going to emerge as a villain.

For now, Noah will be the person to keep her grounded in reality, but I am getting the feeling he's going to start asking questions.

She disappears in the dead of night to solve problems with her siblings. That's a big thing, and he must be wondering what she's been doing.

Michael Learns the Truth - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3

Then there was Michael and Alex. Did anybody seriously think these two would be able to make a relationship work?

Alex is struggling to find his place in the world, and that's a result of his overbearing father.

Alex thinks Michael is a criminal, and he's never really going to stray from that train of thought until Michael grows up and starts earning an honest living.

Alex did try to reach out to Michael even though he knew it would put him on the outs with his father. Jesse is all about soldiers acting like soldiers and keeping away from the riff-raff of the town.

People talk in small towns. That's what makes shows set in small communities work so well.

They're ripe with storylines. For now, Michael doesn't seem ready to make any changes, and that's a big turn off for Alex.

That's all I got.
