Montana was weird. 

I expected it to be weird ... but not that weird. 

When Jane the Virgin Season 5 first began and Michael's amnesia backstory got revealed, I was excited to explore a little piece of Jason's life.

But upon arrival in Montana on Jane the Virgin Season 5 Episode 7, I wanted nothing more than to go home and cuddle up to Rafael. 

It turns out, so did Jane. 

Yes, Jane finally made her choice between Team Michael and Team Rafael, but the journey toward her decision has been slightly offputting for fans.  

For much of the episode, I wondered if the writers were drunk or if they were possibly trolling us.

Is Jane the Virgin getting a kick out of dividing the fandom one last time and making everyone suffer?

I'm truly bewildered by everything that's happening this season. 

While I didn't enjoy my time in Montana, it was a necessary trip for Jane to clear her head and figure out what the heart wants. 

Getting away helped Jane and Michael answer some lingering questions and explore unresolved feelings.

It allowed them to test their relationship in its new shape without the pressure of old memories or Mateo and Rafael weighing them down. 

I also love that for the first time ever, Jane couldn't rely on Xo and Abuela's advice to help her formulate a decision.

She's always been so dependant on her family but without cell service, the decision was hers and hers alone. 

And sorry Michael fans, it probably wasn't what you were expecting. 

After spending a bit of time together, it became clear that Michael and Jane are very good friends. 

But that's all they are at this point -- friends. 

The spark they had as a couple died probably about the time we thought Michael died. 

Their manure fight in the stables proved that they work better as friends. 

They know how to have fun with each other, and they enjoy each other's company, but it's strictly platonic. 

As we learned more about Michael-Jason's life in Montana, we understood that he entered a new chapter. Despite his memories returning, he was more Jason than he was Michael. 

His life was Montana, not Miami.

And while it was sweet that Michael was willing to consider long distance for Jane, it wasn't exactly a set-up that could ever work. 

Michael was hopeful, but only because he was still hanging on to what once was.

And Jane realized that she didn't fit into his life anymore.

I mean, I laughed out loud when she imagined moving out there and becoming a ranch wife. Girl, who are you kidding?

To be honest, I think Jane's known for a while that her spark with Michael fizzled, yet she felt like she owed it to herself and to Michael to give their relationship a real shot. 

After all, she'd spent a lot of time wishing that her husband would return, and now that he had, she felt like she was supposed to want things to return to what was once considered "normal." 

But people grow apart, and as Jane quickly learned, you can't force feelings.

The person you're supposed to be with is the one you can't stop thinking about.

Even though Rafael was hundreds of miles away, Jane couldn't get him out of her mind.

Out of sight doesn't mean out of mind, and despite all the fun she was having with Michael, Jane's mind kept drifting back to her baby daddy. 

Montana proved to Jane once and for all that her heart belonged to Rafael. 

Telling Michael that she wasn't in love with him anymore was painful to watch.

How many times does Jane have to say goodbye to him?

But Jane's good with words and she summed it up perfectly; so many things changed during the four-year gap, the biggest change being her relationship with Raf. 

She fell in love again. 

Rafael is the man who loved her unconditionally through her flaws, offered support, and held her up when she needed it most. 

He's her family and her future. 

Michael understood that because, as I said before, he was trying to force something that once worked, too. 

Sadly, Jane's realization came a little too late.

When she finally got home from Montana and presumably washed away the smell of cow poop, Rafael wasn't interested. 

He couldn't just forget the past few weeks as if they never happened. 

And I don't blame him. Jane put him through hell. He was secure enough in their relationship to take Michael back home, and she, once again, did the roundabout we've all grown so tired of her taking. 

She proved that she didn't know who her heart belongs too, and she didn't choose Rafael yet again. 

We all know how terrible it feels not to be chosen.

After getting rejected, Jane swore she was going to fight for Rafael, and considering the spoilers that she'd be getting married by the end of the season and all the spoiler photos of her in a wedding dress, it's safe to say she does win him back eventually.

But should she?

Does Jane deserve Rafael's unconditional love?

Has she finally learned her lesson?

I'm proud of Rafael for not giving in despite clearly still loving Jane. He put himself first and that's a huge step for him. 

It also changes the dynamic as there's never been a situation where Jane was denied someone she really wanted. 

Rafael and Michael have always been at her beck and call, so it'll be interesting to see her spearhead the fight for love this time.

As for the episode, it's probably going to go down as the worst episode in Jane the Virgin history. 

The western vibe was very over the top and prevented me from taking the storyline seriously.

This is the final season yet we're wasting time watching Jane learn to lasso a bull and have a pointless face-off with villain Charlie (Brett Dier's real-life girlfriend, Haley Lu Richardson). Why?

I was almost certain the beef between Charlie and Michael was going to have romantic undertones, but they couldn't even give him that. 

I was really hoping Michael would have a girlfriend in Montana so that he'd at least get a happy ending.

Maybe we're just supposed to assume that Michael is going to stay behind and live happily with Charlie?

I may not be Team Michael, but I do enjoy Michael as a character and the way they treated him after bringing him back from the dead has been downright bogus. 

Jane basically abandoned him in Montana where he's lived in a humble abode -- emphasis on the humble --  with no furniture and a job that requires him to do chores like picking up cow poop.

Seriously?

It's frustrating and heartbreaking.  

Why did they bring him back just to give him a mediocre ending once again?

There was so much potential with his resurrection, so many different avenues they could have taken with his character, and this is what they decided.

They could have spared all of us -- he was better off dead. 

It seems like Michael was only used as a plot device so that Jane would make the choice to be with Rafael this time. 

And that may be the lowest blow of all. 

No, scratch that. 

Not allowing Michael to have a genuine goodbye with Rogelio was the lowest blow.

Michael's last episode being an over-the-top Western makes me think that maybe the fans who assumed this has been a telenovela told by Mateo were right all along. 

There are plenty of moments in the series that are unrealistic, but this episode, in particular, stood out. 

It could be a subtle reveal telling us that Jane's whole life story is a work of fiction. 

If so, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the fandom's wrath.

I'm eager to move on from this love triangle, but hopefully, we don't spend the remainer of the season watching Jane chase a guy she already had. 

If you watch Jane the Virgin online, you know there are so many promising storylines involving the other characters, and I hope we'll begin addressing them soon. 

What's up with Xo's cancer? Is her sex life back on track?

Is Jorge into Alba? Can she find herself a real man?

Who was the creepy man in the twins' bedroom?

What the hell is Sin Rostro really plotting?

Will Luisa find her happiness after enduring so much emotional suffering throughout the series?

Who are Raf's parents? Will he ever find them?

Is Mateo Sr. alive?

We have so many unanswered questions yet we've spent a whopping seven episodes watching Jane spin in circles.

I'm firmly standing by 2.3 rating. Please, don't disappoint me like this again, Jane the Virgin.
