31 Characters Who Fail at Being "Just Friends"

at .

No matter how hard they may attempt to be, some television characters can't be "just friends."

They may do their best to keep romance out of it, but if you're meant for each other there's no fighting it.

When romance fails, characters will even give the platonic route a go, which doesn't always work out either.

Whatever the circumstances are, we created a list of 31 characters who fail at being "just friends!"

1. Bellamy and Clarke - The 100

Bellamy and Clarke are the least platonic ship on the planet. The jealous looks, the loving gazes, and the too-long hugs are getting out of hand. The show could end with them both married to other people, and we still wouldn't believe that they're not in love with each other. If anything, they're just too stubborn to admit it.

2. Josh and Liza - Younger

Josh and Liza have been trying to be in each other's lives in a non-romantic way, and they're failing miserably. Everyone can see the sparks flying between them, and while she may be with Charles right now, we have hope that Josh and Liza will give things another go.

3. Tyrone and Tandy - Cloak and Dagger

There's no one more important to Tyrone and Tandy than each other. They've been by each other's side through everything, and they're each other's person. They may be just friends right now, but their relationship evolves every day into something more.

4. Carson and Mrs. Hughes - Downton Abbey

These two spent so long working together that friends seemed like a natural thing for them to be. But there was much more between them as proven when Carson proposes, and there were several instances that led viewers to believe they were crushing on each other from the beginning.

5. Liz and Max - Roswell, New Mexico

Max is too far gone over Liz to be just friends with her. He's been in love with Liz for his entire life. Max even spent the whole first season pouring his heart out to her, and we couldn't be happier that she returned his feelings.

6. Lucifer and Chloe - Lucifer

Lucifer and Chloe are partners in every sense of the word. They've both had romances with other people, but for some reason, they could never be as vulnerable with anyone else as they are with each other. Their friendship eventually turned into much more, and it changed Lucifer for the better.

7. Gert and Chase - Marvel's Runaways

Gert had a crush on Chase for forever, and her feelings were obvious whenever they were alone together. Even Karolina called her out on her actions. But Gert's feelings weren't a one-way street, and Chase ended up crushing on his friend right back.

8. Fitz and Simmons - Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fitz and Simmons are like two peas in a pod. They thrive off of one another, and they're at their best when they're together. They had always been best friends, but Fitz always wanted to be more. It took them almost drowning for him to finally admit his feelings, but we're glad he did.

9. Zoey and Chase - Zoey 101

This one may be a blast from the past, but Zoey and Chase fit this theme so well that it would be a crime not to include them. Chase had been crushing on Zoey for the entire series, and once she knew about his feelings, they couldn't go back to being best friends. Thank you, Nickelodeon for giving 2000's kids the endgame they deserve.

10. Mike and Eleven - Stranger Things

Mike and Eleven are one of the purest ships in existence, and they can never be just friends. But it would be nice if they hit pause on the romance, and viewers were able to watch their relationship grow while the kids grow as well.

11. Barry and Iris - The Flash

Barry has been in love with Iris since the moment he found out what love was. The besties have been there for each other throughout all of life's ups and downs, and even Iris' dad knew that they were always meant to be more than friends.

12. Brittany and Santana - Glee

Brittany and Santana had a complicated relationship. They were best friends who also harbored feelings for each other. They had a lot of obstacles to overcome, but love won out, and they ended up happily married.

13. David and Patrick - Schitt's Creek

The moment David kissed Patrick, everything changed. David may have been unsure of what exactly their relationship was, but it didn't take long for them both to realize it was a lot more than friendship.

14. Betty and Archie - Riverdale

Betty and Archie still not acting on their feelings for each other is plain ridiculous. You can't spend your whole life being in love with your best friend to having those feelings disappear overnight. We have hope that Riverdale is playing the long game when it comes to Barchie and they'll finally give in to what's been brewing between them for years.

15. Luke and Lorelai - Gilmore Girls

Luke and Lorelai were so in love with each other that it was painful to watch them be just friends. But it wasn't just hard on viewers; it was hard on them as well. Neither of them was truly happy until they were with each other.

16. Devon and Julian - The Resident

Devon and Julian may have tried to keep things platonic, but they failed miserably. Devon's feelings for his co-worker was even the reason that he called off his wedding. You know what they say, time creates affection. And those two definitely spent a lot of time together.

17. Hannah and Clay - 13 Reasons Why

Hannah and Clay deserved a lot better, and it hurts our hearts that they'll never have the chance to be happy together. They were friends who kept crushing on each other, but something would always get in the way of them having a relationship.

18. Dan and Blair - Gossip Girl

As soon as Dan and Blair stopped being enemies and started becoming friends, it was clear that there was something more between them. After they went through a pointless breakup so Gossip Girl could carry out their original plans, their friendship was pretty much done.

19. Amy and Jonah - Superstore

No matter how hard they tried to fight it, Amy and Jonah couldn't stay away from each other. Even when Amy was married and Jonah was in a relationship, everyone knew that they could never be just friends.

20. Mulder and Scully - The X-Files

It's comical how many times Mulder and Scully had to let people know that they were partners and nothing more. But sometimes other people can see what's going on even if you can't, and in this case, they were all right.

21. Amy and Karma - Faking It

The moment Amy and Karma started faking a romance, it was impossible for them ever to be just friends again. Amy fell in love with Karma instantly, and no matter how much she tried to get rid of her feelings, she never could.

22. Rick and Michonne - The Walking Dead

Rick and Michonne started cracking up during their first kiss, and we loved every second of it. They were so surprised that they didn't see what was right in front of them all along. Of course, viewers had seen the undeniable sparks between them, so we weren't shocked to see them finally act on it.

23. Nick and Jess - New Girl

Nick and Jess were friends for two seasons before anything romantic happened between them. When their relationship didn't work out, they went back to being besties, but that didn't last long each other. Once they finally accepted they were meant to be, everything felt right.

24. Ben and Leslie - Parks and Recreation

Ben was perfectly aware that he and Leslie couldn't be just friends. He even told her that they shouldn't have any contact if they couldn't be together. But it all worked out for the best, and they ended up happily married.

25. Stefan and Caroline - The Vampire Diaries

It's not surprising at all that Stefan and Caroline eventually fell for each other. They had both been through their fair share of heartbreak, and they leaned on one another through all the hard times. It may have taken six seasons, but we're glad that these two had a relationship upgrade.

26. Monica and Chandler - Friends

Monica and Chandler were friends for years before anything happened between them. But once they had an impromptu hookup in London, they couldn't go back to a friendship no matter how hard they tried. It was comical watching them try to keep things platonic.

27. Chuck and Sarah - Chuck

Chuck and Sarah had to keep their relationship professional for the sake of their jobs, but no matter how many times they tried to say they were friends, it was apparent they were harboring feelings for each other. Everyone knew that there was more going on between them than they cared to admit.

28. George and Izzie - Grey's Anatomy

They may have been best friends for years, but their relationship eventually developed into something much more. The only reason they ended things was that the timing wasn't quite right, but if George and Izzie were still on the show, they never would have been able to be just friends again.

29. Stiles and Lydia - Teen Wolf

Even Stiles' best friend knew there was something more going on between his besties. Lydia was Stiles' emotional tether for goodness sakes. It may have taken them a lot of time and near-death experiences to admit their love for each other, but it was worth the wait.

30. Jim and Pam - The Office

Jim and Pam were friends for seasons, but viewers could tell that there was a lot more to their relationship. Jim was in love with Pam from the beginning, and no matter how hard Pam tried to fight her feelings for him, she couldn't.

31. Bones and Booth - Bones

Hearing Booth and Bones say they're just friends for seasons on end got exhausting. When they ended up falling in love and getting married, we couldn't help but laugh at the irony. Who didn't see that coming?
