Alan Cumming, who currently stars as a series regular on CBS summer drama, Instinct, has landed a recurring role on USA Network's upcoming anthology series, Briarpatch.

The first season is based on Ross Thomas' novel of the same name, with Rosario Dawson playing an investigator who makes her big return to her Texas hometown following her sister's murder. 

She embarks on a dangerous mission to unmask the killer but finds herself confronting her own past in the process.

Cumming will play a "murderous arms dealer" according to TV Line. He will return to town and cause a lot of problems. 

The star's casting on the show will not affect his role on Instinct, which is slated to return on Sunday for Season 2.

CBS has yet to renew or cancel the series, but TV Line confirmed that there would be no conflict. 

Meanwhile, How to Get Away with Murder creator, Pete Nowalk, is working on a new drama for Freeform, according to THR

Nowalk will join forces with first-time creator Keith Staskiewicz for Close Up, a brand new thriller. 

It follows Rachel Guyer, a high school student in Centreville, New Jersey, who sets out to expose the less than savory happenings in her hometown.

"Keith is a brilliant storyteller. He’s created a show that is unique, mysterious and timely,” Nowalk said.

“We feel lucky that our executives at Freeform and Signature share our passion for these characters and can't wait to make the pilot."

Showtime at TCA: The L Word Sequel, Shameless Renewed

Over on Showtime, The L Word: Generation Q has rounded out its cast. 

The latest additions are Jacqueline Toboni (Grimm), Arienne Mandi (In the Vault), Rosanny Zayas (The Code), and Leo Sheng. 

Original series stars Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig, and Leisha Hailey will be back in their original roles in the new series.

It follows “a new generation of self-possessed LGBTQIA characters experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success in Los Angeles.”

The L Word sequel was ordered earlier this year, and production is slated to get underway in Los Angeles this summer for a fall launch.
