Grey's Anatomy Boss Reveals Why This Love Interest for Meredith Was Cut

Meredith Grey is currently in love!

During Grey's Anatomy Season 15, aka the season of love, the show's leading lady shacked up with Andrew De Luca.

But if showrunner, Krista Vernoff, stuck to her original plan, MerLuca may never have happened.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the powerhouse who is widely recognized as the creative force who reinvigorated the series has revealed that there was supposed to be a new love interest for Meredith during Grey's Anatomy Season 14.

However, Vernoff put the kibosh on the plans when a pesky TV journalist (!) learned all about the plan while it was in the works.

"[He] found out that we were casting a European scientist as a potential love interest for Meredith," she said.

"When that got leaked, I went into the writers' room and said, 'That's not interesting to me anymore. What else could this character be?'

"That character became Marie Cerone, the old friend of Meredith's mom."

"It was a much more interesting story than some temporary love interest. We changed it because we wanted to thwart expectations."

If you watch Grey's Anatomy online, you know that Marie Cerone was an old friend of Meredith's mother, Ellis Grey.

Meredith needed Marie's permission to use a polymer for her research. In a surprising twist, Mer learned that Ellis took credit for work the pair had done together several years before.

Meredith strived to make sure that Marie got the credit she deserved, and all was right in the world.

In all honesty, it was a solid sub-plot and worked a lot better than another one-episode wonder like Dr. Nick Marsh.
