Practical Magic Prequel Among Pilot Orders at HBO Max

HBO Max has added some more projects to its development slate.

One of which is a prequel to Practical Magic, per Deadline

Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones) will executive produce and write Rules of Magic, an  “epic, generational family drama set in 1960s New York City” that follows three siblings named Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens who find themselves facing "abnormalities" that have kept them apart from each other.

The trio is forced to deal with grief, war, bigotry, and dark magic alongside a crazy curse that forces to keep them away from the path of love.

It's certainly an interesting hook for a series, and it's not difficult to draw similarities to Charmed (both the WB version and The CW's reboot).

Alice Hoffman wrote the Practical Magic novel that went on to be adapted to the 1998 movie of the same name which starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

That movie suffered from a poor response from critics but garnered a cult following.

John Wells (ER) is attached to serve as Executive Producer on Red Bird Lane, another pilot that has snagged an order at HBO Max.

The series focuses on a group of eight strangers who arrive at an isolated house, each with reasons for doing so.

However, they're not prepared for the horrors that await them upon their arrival.

The third pilot order has Lena Dunham attached as an EP. That pilot is for a potential series titled Generation.

It is a half-hour series that follows a group of high school students whose “exploration of modern sexuality (devices and all) tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community.”
