If only we were getting this level of drama from the beginning of Suits Season 9.
Suits Season 9 Episode 9 -- the penultimate episode of the series -- felt like the Suits of old. In a word? Awesome.
There's no question about whether the series has been repeating itself lately, but it's poised to go out with an action-packed series finale that will change everything.
"Thunder Away" was the perfect installment to set up the conflicts for the series finale, but unless USA Network is offering up an expanded series-ender, there may be some threads left dangling when the curtain comes down for the last time.
Harvey is at his most vulnerable, and it was painful to watch. But it shows a side of Harvey that is infinitely more likable than the character has been in recent episodes.
It's only natural to reflect on things that should have been done differently when you lose someone you love.
Harvey: You're screwed, Faye, because you got no defense.
Faye: Yes, I do. Because you two are going to represent me.
Harvey despised his mother from his adolescent years right up until recently.
It's playing on Harvey's mind, and the flashback of him blaming her for his father not showing up to his baseball game was probably just the tip of the iceberg.
What was most pleasant about the aftermath of Lily's death is that Harvey and Marcus didn't turn on each other. It would have been easy for Marcus to complain about Harvey keeping his mother at arm's length for much of his life.
But what we got was an accurate portrayal of two brothers weighed down in the depths of grief.
The offer to stay with Marcus for a few days probably sounded like some much-needed respite, but Harvey had a more pressing matter on his mind.
Taking down Faye.
Somebody call for Robin? Pretty sure I saw the Bat-signal last night.Mike
Even though I've sided with Faye on several occasions throughout Suits Season 9, we're now at the point in which her obsession with hurting Harvey shows her true colors.
Faye likes to think she plays by the rules, but the truth is, she will go to any lengths to fire Harvey, and that was probably her undoing.
Samantha and Mike burying the hatchet seemed like a perfect plan on paper, but Faye is a formidable force who will not roll over and accept defeat.
I always loved baseball. I got it from my dad. He taught me everything, how to pitch, how to hit. An hour in that bat and cage was my favorite way to spend an afternoon. Which is why until recently whenever I thought about baseball, I always thought I hated him, but the truth is, it was my mom that took me to every practice. Cheered me on for every game, never missed a second. She was always there ... even when I thought she wasn't. I didn't know that for a long time, but now I do. She used to tell me that none of us were perfect, that we all made mistakes. But she always owned hers. She taught us about right and wrong and forgiveness. I just have so many things I wish I could say to you. Things I should have said a long time ago. I am so sorry it took me so long. I'll miss ya and I'll always love ya.Harvey
That's why she turned to Harvey and Louis to represent her in the courtroom. It was a genuinely shocking development because it meant Harvey and Louis were forced to turn on the people they've worked with for years.
Knowing that helping Faye win would get rid of her was the icing on the cake for Harvey and Louis, but they never could have anticipated what happened in the courtroom.
Samantha and Mike worked very well together to make people think about the type of person Faye really is, but I wish Louis didn't feel the need to attack Samantha's character.
Samantha helped Louis through some of the toughest moments of his life, so she felt like she was thrown to the wolves in the courtroom.
There's no getting away from that.
Mike: Listen Harvey, about what I said the last time I was here...
Harvey: Don't worry about it. You being here is everything.
However, I don't doubt they will be popping bottles of champagne if Faye ultimately leaves the firm on Suits Season 9 Episode 10.
Still, I can't shake the feeling that there are going to be some big changes for the firm -- if it even continues to exist.
Katrina has been fired, and that hurt the most. If there's one character who tries to stay out of that grey area, it's Katrina.
She was too naive in thinking that Faye would allow her to get away with collusion. Katrina failed to recognize that Faye was pissed, and she would have fired anyone who pestered her in that moment.
Lily: Can I get your autograph?
Harvey: Where's dad?
Lily: Oh, sweetheart. He wanted to be here.
Harvey: You said he would be here.
Lily: Harvey, his gig got extended last night and I didn't want to tell you before the game.
Harvey: So, you lied and pretended he was going to be here when you knew he wasn't.
Lily: Harvey, stop.
Harvey: That was the most important game of my life, and he wasn't here.
Lily: And he feels horrible about it, but your dad is working his butt off for us.
Harvey: So what? I just played the best I ever have and every time I looked up, the only person I could see was you. How could you do that to me?
Lily: I'm doing the best I can, Harvey. None of us are perfect.
Harvey: Yeah, well I was today, and now it's all ruined because of you.
But Katrina may well decide that she's done with the firm. The way Harvey yelled at her was despicable, especially when she was trying to find the best solution to save everyone.
Harvey is not in the right frame of mind to be dealing with that BS, but he knows he needs to find a way to get rid of Faye before she succeeds in getting rid of him.
Maybe he'll be happy when all of this is said and done, and maybe he'll finally pop the question to Donna.
Donna never had the pleasure of meeting Lily, but she will get to wear something of hers if she decides to marry Harvey. That's something we can expect to happen on Suits Season 9 Episode 10.
Mike: Alright, give it to me straight, Donna. How's he really doing?
Donna: To tell you the truth, this couldn't have come at a worse time.
Mike: You mean because of the Faye thing?
Donna: I mean because his family has been shattered and at the same time this woman has been dismantling his other family. Mike, she's never going to stop.
Mike: Don't tell me. You have an idea of how to fix that?
Donna: I do. You've obviously forgiven Harvey for what happened on that case, but the question is, can you forgive everyone?
We may be looking at a conclusion that finds Harvey and Donna moving to the same city as Mike and Rachel to work in the new firm. That's assuming Mike can forgive Harvey for bringing a subpoena out for drinks.
That final twist was the best of the episode. There was so much pain behind Harvey's eyes as he passed Mike the envelope.
