Superstore Season 5 Premiere Preview: Cloud 9 Stands for Mateo

at .

Superstore has always ended its seasons on massive cliffhangers and the Superstore Season 4 finale was no different.

Amy and Jonah's quams about the future and Sandra's engagement were both topics that will carry on into Superstore Season 5, but there was one storyline in particular that overshadowed everything else.

After struggling with his status as an undocumented immigrant for years, everything finally came to a head for Mateo when he was carted away and detained during an ICE raid at Cloud 9.

There will be no time jump like there has been in the past.

While many of Superstore's premieres have picked up months after the events of the finale, Superstore Season 5 Episode 1 takes place only hours after Mateo has been taken.

As shown in a sneak peek, the Cloud 9 employees will hold a candlelight vigil to show their support for Mateo. But it quickly becomes clear that no one knows quite what to do about the situation.

Given that all the characters are different, everyone has a different reaction to what happened.

While Cheyenne finds herself in denial, Marcus, Garrett, and Dina decide to use the opportunity to take action.

The trio is an interesting combination, given that Dina doesn't appear to be forgiving Garrett for letting her birds loose anytime soon, and Marcus is, well, Marcus.

Meanwhile, Amy and Jonah, who have always been the more rational ones in the group, have a bit of a different strategy.

Since Amy is the one reporting to corporate, it provides the perfect opportunity for her to work as a double agent. To keep all talk of a union under wraps, Amy and Jonah try to return the store to some sense of normalcy.

Fail - Superstore Season 5 Episode 1

Unfortunatly, this does include embracing corporate's latest invention, "Cloud 9.0."

As Ben Feldman said in a recent interview with TV Fanatic, the robots are taking over. The employees are scared for their jobs, and rightfully so.

Corporate's poor treatment of their employees has always been a major theme of Superstore, and it's clear that this theme will continue well into Superstore Season 5

Amy, Jonah, and the rest of the employees first took action when they walked out during Superstore Season 1, to protest Glenn's undeserved termination.

The New "Glen" - Superstore Season 5 Episode 1

When Cheyenne couldn't get maternity leave and ended up giving birth in the store, Glenn gave her weeks of paid time off, which didn't sit well with the powers that be.

What started as a campaign for Glenn's job back quickly turned into a strike in which the workers demanded maternity leave, liveable wages, and health care.

After all the employees were offered their jobs back with no repercussions, everyone but Amy and Jonah went back to work. The pair eventually joined the rest of their co-workers, but they promised to pick the fight back up another day.

Well, another day is here and now, and now that Amy is the store manager, they have an edge like never before.

Superstore has always had a talent for tackling real-world issues, without making the show into something it's not.

The series remains a comedy, but it also addresses problems that are not comedic.

That can be a hard line to toe, as they run the risk of calling humor to something that needs to be taken seriously.

On Superstore Season 5 Episode 1, Superstore continues to prove that even a sitcom can be innovative.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Superstore is one of the most groundbreaking series currently on television.

Rooftop Gathering - Superstore Season 5 Episode 1

The series has officially raised the bar for television everywhere, and is beginning to make other programs look bad in comparison.

The show's humor comes from the ridiculous reactions of the characters.

Even though their hearts are in the right place, their nonsensical plans to help Mateo will easily elicit a laugh from viewers and keep the lighthearted tone of the show alive.

But no matter how funny the characters may be, it doesn't take away from the somberness of the topic at hand, and it's clear how seriously the creative forces behind the show take the subject of immigration.

Visiting Mateo - Superstore Season 5 Episode 1

If there's one major takeway from Superstore Season 5 Episode 1, it's that Mateo's situation is not something to be taken lightly and will not be resolved as easily as the characters may have hoped.

In addition to Cloud 9.0, finding a way to save Mateo will most likely be a major storyline that continues to carry on throughout Superstore Season 5

We can say with confidence that viewers will not be disappointed when they watch Superstore's premiere.
