Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 3 Review: Reunited

at .

Oh boy, the relationships are about to get more interesting, aren't they?

But first, two of The Charmed Ones guest-starred on Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 3 as sisters, of course, and by the end of the hour, it was the funniest storyline this season thus far.

Can you imagine going through all of the bickering, tears, and angst only to discover your brain dead sister isn't brain dead or your sister?!

Charmed Sisters - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 3

It was a tedious storyline for Richard and Alex. For most of it, Alex was non-existent. And Webber, God bless him, had the task of playing referee for Hayley and Heidi.

The two sisters could not be more different, and so their approach to their sister Heather's accident was to fall on opposite sides of what to do with her.

Hayley (Milano) was the free-spirited one who believed the hospital had "bad energy." She brought in crystals to place around "Heather's" head and hoped healing energy could bring her sister back before they had to pull the plug.

Hayley - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 3

Heidi was the practical one who leaned toward science and didn't want Heather to be in pain. She wanted to pull the plug on her.

Their back and forth was driving Webber nuts, and the woman who decided to steal Heather's phone and purse was paying for her sins if she had to listen to everything going on.

No, no this is not how we end. We're family, and I know we've drifted apart, but this is not how we end.

Heidi

It was surprising when the phone rang, and Heather was on the other end. Richard had gone through the whole process of taking the mystery woman off of ventilation. He was so sincere with the process and respectful of what the women were going through.

The ending was what made the entire storyline worth it.

Heidi - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 3

What is the process after a hospital accidentally notifies the wrong people and takes a person off of ventilation? What a hassle and a disaster.

Poor Alex had to resolve the issue on his own. Richard took off because of the case reminding him to forgive his wife. He set out to talk with Catherine, but then he ended up with Gemma.

Webber: You can bicker for the rest of your lives for all I care, but in this moment, Heather needs you. So pull yourselves together.
Heidi: He sounds like mom.

It's always a delight to see Jasmine Guy onscreen, and it was lovely to hear Gemma is sober now after the last time Richard saw her.

She was looking good, and she works at the hospital in billing. If they were going to be friends, then there's nothing oppositional about this storyline, but it sounds like Richard may be playing with fire.

An Old Friend - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 22

You hate to think it, but it isn't the first time Richard stepped out on his wife, Maggie is proof of it, you know? Is it possible that after all of these years and everything he's gone through with Catherine, there's a temptation?

It's just dinner, yes? It doesn't have to be more than that. Of course, this is Grey's Anatomy, and they like throwing us some curveballs.

Bailey's firing streak is a bit of a curveball. It's unfortunate how no matter how it plays out, she doesn't fare well in the eyes of fandom or the other characters with her decisions.

don't talk to me about teaching I taught my entire career. Some kids get it, and some kids don't. And you don't find out until two years later when you either get a beautiful thank you note, or you find out one of them tried to rob a library naked.

Shirley

Shirley was a no-nonsense patient. She agreed to do her surgery only because of Meredith Grey. No Meredith, no surgery.

Mer Helps Jo - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 24

As a patient, her position is understandable. Meredith is who she's familiar with, and she's the person with the experience. You don't want some "child" running into your room and claiming she's taking over.

It's something the series was going to have to explore anyway. Jo is still a baby in our eyes.

Proving herself was inevitable.

Shirley: If I had known she was fired, I would have stayed on a beach in Costa Rica. Dr. Grey is the whole reason I'm here.
Qadri: You and me both.

She had to instill faith in both her colleagues and the patients who came for Meredith.

Supportive Girlfriend - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 18

The remote location arrangement was clever, and it was nice that Meredith could talk her mentee through and see her complete her first major surgery as an attending with success.

Bailey is hard on Meredith; there's no disputing it. However, on a series where no one ever is, can't you understand it a bit?

The entire hour was tripping over itself and reminding us how great Meredith Grey is, and after a while, it was ludicrous.

Webber Unemployed - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 1

Shirley only wanted Meredith, so they had to accommodate her by giving Meredith video chat access. Fortunately, they didn't go with Jo's suggestion.

She wanted Bailey to give Meredith special privileges for this one surgery as if Meredith isn't suspended until her hearing.

The situation sucks, and everyone has feelings about it. Fair enough, but the world doesn't bend to Meredith Grey. Sure, Cristina told her once that she's the Sun, but good grief!

Maggie: Honesty and privacy are not mutually exclusive.
Amelia: Ohh, I like that!

They say once you reach 40, you stop giving a damn, and Meredith gives zero damns these days.

Unlawful Mom - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 1

She has taken this rebel with a cause thing and ran with it, but it's almost too much. Her makeout session with DeLuca to spite her warden was obnoxious as hell.

But it careened over the cliff of absurdity when quiet, mousy Qadri who barely has screentime or lines went on a tirade against the Chief of the hospital about Bailey's decision to fire Meredith.

Qadri: Fine, you want to count residents? Guess how many residents came here to work with Meredith Grey? We didn't come here for Dr. Koracick, or Karev, or Avery, Dr. Bailey. We didn't come here for you! We had our choice in programs, but we picked this one. I picked this one, and it wasn't to watch Meredith Grey on a TV screen.
Bailey: Oh, you know what? You're right. You shouldn't have to work like that, so let's fix it. Work somewhere else.
Qadri: What?
Bailey: You're fired, Dr. Qadri. Now you and your hero got something in common.

We already know other doctors left the hospital in protest. Everyone but the doctors closest to her, otherwise, there wouldn't be a series.

But now, we have first-year residents fresh off their internship going off on the Chief in the halls of GSM. What?

Dahlia Qadri - Grey's Anatomy

Whether you agree with Bailey or not, in what universe is that acceptable? It reaches a point where the lack of respect for Bailey's authority is offputting. She's still everyone's boss.

Qadri had a passionate story about how she dreamed of working with Meredith and how she only came to the hospital for her, but if we had seen that at any point before this, it would've landed better.

Happy moms are better moms.

Owen

Helm, with her limited screentime, is the known Meredith Grey fangirl. Wasn't Qadri the one who excelled at Trauma with Owen and always fell over herself for Avery due to her physical attraction to him and appreciation of his skillset?

Now we're supposed to believe all the interns and residents came to GSM, a hospital filled to the brim with esteemed, world-renown surgeons, for Meredith and Meredith alone? Coming for one person isn't fool-proof because anything can happen.

Mentoring the Interns - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 2

Qadri was bold enough to come at Bailey, her boss, like that, but was shocked when Bailey's response was to fire her. How?

Should Bailey have fired her? Probably not. It's deciding on emotion in the heat of the moment.

It's not the best solution for everyone who challenges her about this, especially since everyone is speaking their peace, but can you understand why she did?

Also, yes. If your instant response isn't "little girl, who are you speaking to like that?" after Qadri's public display, then more power to you.

Bailey in Her Element - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 2

Meanwhile, DeLuca did a 180. He remembered he is a senior resident, and instead of whining about the younger staff getting to scrub in to, you know, learn, he could mentor them.

He's a great teacher when he wants to be, so this suits him better, but he's giving a girl whiplash regardless. He's in this awkward state of wanting to be a big boy with the rest of the staff but also slumming it with the underlings.

Related: Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Fear Response

Hence the whiplash.

I don't know what will happen in the next life, but I didn't want to leave this one without seeing you again.

Mrs.Oh

Levi will be able to perform a central line without issue thanks to DeLuca and Nico, who is putting his hat in the ring for being the best boyfriend. Sure, he can't compete with Link, but he's giving it a go.

Supportive Bae - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 2

Nico was useful. It sounds harsh, but he often suffered from a lack of storyline and development, and he mostly revolves around Levi.

However, it was sweet when he stepped in with the senior-aged Korean woman who was looking for Birdy.

How is it possible to fall in love with a love story within the hour? Weren't they the cutest?!

Maggie: Wow, I never felt that way about anyone.
Amelia: I'm hormonal. I feel that way about everyone.

Birdy was vibrant and full of life, and when he recalled his greatest moments in life and his regrets, you wanted nothing but the best for this man in his years to come.

Camping Not Glamping - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Episode 14

He was wise and his advice to Maggie was the best. Hopefully, she can take it to heart.

His reunion with his first love was the sweetest moment of the hour, and Nico was also a sucker for a good love story. The love between those two brought the best out for Nico, Amelia, and Maggie.

Maggie: He just walked out of the fog with a new girlfriend, like I never existed. I think I might actually hate him.
Zola: My teacher said hating someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.
Maggie: Go get ready for school.

Maggie is struggling with the Jackson and Vic thing. It was a laugh out loud moment when Zola, juice pouch in hand, bluntly told her aunt that anger poisons her and that she needs to let it go.

Zola is the best, and Zola and aunt Maggie moments are even better.

Future Surgeon in the Making

Birdy and Zola are right, though. Jackson has moved on, and it is fast and infuriating, but it's to her benefit that she move on too.

Screw him! Why let him know how much he screwed you up inside? Don't let him win, Maggie, even if he's not trying to, but still!

She was able to keep things cordial with Vic, and it was a great moment. It sucks when the default is to make women catty or pit them against each others, so even though it was awkward, we can move past that part now.

You know my training is to zero in on the smallest most intimate detail, making sure it gets all the attention it deserves, really, just making sure that I'm taking care of every last inch of my patient's needs. So, um, while I may not have been trained to carry a 200-pound man anywhere, I do have a great number of skills that I think you'll find come in handy.

Jackson

The show is committed to this Jackson and Vic thing, eh? It still feels weird and too soon.

Jackson is Over It - tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 2

Their exchange and makeout session in one of the rooms was something else. The close-up shots to Jackson's lips and all the sexy whispering were so extra.

The double entendres while he was stitching her up and talking about his various skills -- all of it was overwhelming, not good, nor bad, it just ... was.

We're going to have to ride this one out, from the looks of things, so it is what it is, you guys. However, if you are a Vic and Jackson 'shipper already, surely, you appreciated the steamy scene for what it was: super hot.

Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano Guest Star - Grey's Anatomy

Do you think Jackson will have issues with Vic being stronger than him? They made a big show of him having a woman who does enjoy camping and hiking, but she's a total badass who can move trees with one hand.

Is Jackson the type to feel emasculated by that? We'll have to see.

Amelia and Link, though, they are the best couple on the series, and they're still dancing around whether or not they're a couple.

Mer: I had no idea that you two were so serious.
Amelia and Link: Neither did we.

You're a couple, you guys! It is the law.

New Parents? - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 2

Amelia didn't know if she wanted to share the news of her pregnancy with anyone else beyond her favorite sister, Maggie, but she decided to go for it.

Initially, it seemed as though her previous issues with pregnancy, and it being too soon is why she had reservations, but it wasn't that.

I'm happy with our decision, but it scares me. And telling people is just going to make it more real and scarier, but it's still a good thing. I want to tell my family and my friends. I want to share this good, and I want you to do it with me.

Amelia

Unfortunately, it's worrying that she's willing to tell people this soon. How the show managed to shift this reviewer's perspective on this baby situation is a skill.

We've graduated from "ugh, not another baby" to "Dear God, don't let anything happen to Amelia's baby!"

Dutiful Aunties - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 1

They shared the news with Meredith and DeLuca, and they were thrilled about it.

Owen probably won't be when he finds out, though. If he finds out anytime soon. He may be taking a break from the hospital to be a stay-at-home-dad to Allison while Teddy goes back to work.

Related: How Supergirl Got James Olsen Wrong!

It's the best arrangement.

Teddy: You're just humoring me because you know I miss the smell of blood
Owen: And that's why you love me.

Teddy is the type of woman who needs more action and to be in the OR. She lives for it.

Teddy and Motherhood - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 1

Owen has wanted fatherhood for so long, and he's skilled at it.

Also, he's not getting much work done now that he has to stay away from Tom all of the time due to the restraining order.

Tom, my love, you're doing too much.

It's one thing to have a restraining order against Owen, but it's another to follow him wherever he goes to force him to leave. Professionalism has to override the petty, man.

Happy Family - Tall - Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 1

Over to you, Grey's Fanatics.

Did you love the Charmed reunion? How funny was their case?

Are they overdoing it with the Meredith fawning? Are you happy Jo completed her first case as an attending?

Is Richard playing with fire going to dinner with Gemma?

Are you coming around to Jackson and Vic?
