Star Trek: Picard Scores Early Season 2 Renewal at CBS All Access

Star Trek: Picard's voyage on CBS All Access is poised to be a long one.

The streamer has renewed the forthcoming series for a second season, months ahead of its series premiere.

Deadline first reported the news, while revealing the sophomore run would come in at 10 episodes, right on par with the first.

The series is set 20 years after Jean-Luc Picard's last adventure in Star Trek: Nemesis and finds him deeply affected by the destruction of Romulus, which occurred in the 2009 film Star Trek.

"We wanted it to be a real time follow-up to where we last saw Picard," executive producer Akiva Goldsman said at New York Comic Con in October.

"We wanted to let the ensuing years that have happened for us also have happened for Jean-Luc. We spent a lot of time, collaboratively, filling in the intervening years. We know pretty much everything that happened in those 20 years. … I include in 'we,' Patrick, who is the singular expert in Picard."

Santiago Cabrera (Salvation), Michelle Hurd (Blindspot), Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Mr. Mercedes), and Isa Briones (American Crime Story: Versace) are also set to appear in series regular roles.

Star Trek: Voyager‘s Jeri Ryan and Next Generation‘s Brent Spiner will also reprise their respective roles as Seven of Nine and Data. Jonathan Frakes (Riker) and Marina Sirtis (Troi) are also set to appear in the first season, but it's unclear how many episodes those two will appear in.

It's no surprise that CBS All Access is doubling down on the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek: Discovery, the first series set in the universe for the streamer, has been a hit domestically and abroad.

Netflix takes the rights to the series outside the U.S., and much of the money made from that deal actually pays the production costs of the series.

It has been confirmed Amazon Prime has locked up the rights to the new series, meaning that viewers abroad will need to be subscribed to both services to keep up with the franchise.

CBS All Access is home to Tell Me a Story, The Good Fight, Why Women Kill, and The Twilight Zone.
