Ray Carling is a fellow detective of Sam's. Dude is big and mean - and a tad sexist - but he's the kind of guy you're glad is on your side when a fight breaks out. 

Ray was the golden boy of the force and the lieutenant's eye until Sam came along. Makes things a bit awkward between them.
