Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 6 Review: Did Kim’s Promotion Come with Strings?

Critic's Rating: 4 / 5.0

Detective Kim Burgess has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

It feels damn good to see a woman in some authority somewhere, and she most certainly earned it.

Of course, nothing ever comes easy, and Chicago PD Season 12 Episode 6 posed a few challenges for Burgess on her path toward a promotion.

Burzek comfort in the locker room.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

Inquiring minds desperately want to know what the hell is the deal with Shawn Hatosy‘s Reid.

It seemed like he took a special interest in Burgess, whether because of who she was and how good she was or because she was part of Voight’s unit, and he was interested in him.

Whatever the case, he had eyes on her for quite some time, and he was all over the case that Burgess and Suarez were working together.

His looming presence was a bit intimidating, particularly for Suarez, who couldn’t help but read further into it, assuming that her job would be on the line if they didn’t wrap the case up properly.

Understandably, this caused Suarez to panic and perhaps go too far, making some tough calls to close this case that feels like a precursor to something bigger.

Elizabeth Rodriguez guest stars as Detective Suarez.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

But again, one has to wonder why Reid requested Suarez, the woman who also conducted Burgess’ interview, to be the sitting detective with her while on a ride-along.

There has to be more to that setup, and it’s hard to determine whether it involved Suarez, too.

Did he want to rattle her?

Is she someone on his radar since she mentioned that he’s been firing people?

Burgess is great. She aced the exam and did well during her interview, so there were no doubts that she could handle herself on the case scene.

Burgess is on the scene of a case that could lead to her promotion.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

Burgess didn’t need any help; she rocked all the way through, even when she flubbed up with that car or wanted to hold back regarding using the baby as leverage; it was either something relatively minor or just a different approach.

Obviously, there has to be room for different approaches, and it was frustrating that Suarez wanted to speak as if she had cornered the proper way to be a detective and that Burgess had to emulate that somehow.

You could sense that part of that was being women in the field; the job is different for them, and Suarez is of the school of thought that they have to be tougher, not make any mistakes, and get the job done while putting up with a hell of a lot.

Unsurprisingly, Suarez would walk away and say that Burgess is “too nice” and needs to harden up or that somehow, Burgess’s having a unit that backs and supports her is a problem.

There’s merit in what Suarez says, but only to an extent.

Kim faces a conundrum when working alongside a new detective.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

Sure, it would probably serve Burgess well if she got to experience the job in another format away from the comforts of what she’s known, but why would it be necessary?

Burgess was a patrol cop who saw a lot of damn action and has been through hell and back.

She’s a tough woman, so she’s part of a unit that feels more like a genuine family and none of that “band of brothers” bullshit that only extends to a certain point as long as everyone falls in line or thinks a certain way.

Suarez probably thought she was giving Burgess sound advice, but she also seemed to be resentful that Burgess got to experience something differently.

It reminds you of the people who almost get upset because those who come after them don’t have it as hard when the question should be, “Why would you want others subjected to the hardships you face?”

Burgess is focused on a case that could lead to her promotion.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

Wouldn’t you want better for them? Otherwise, what were you trying to combat and fight for in the first place?

After a prolonged absence from the season, it was a solid hour focused exclusively on Burgess.

The others were merely background noise; interestingly, we didn’t have much of the team there until nearly halfway through the hour.

Voight was chill and happy to help Burgess however necessary, and you could feel his pride.

Even towards the end, which was great because Burgess had to wonder if Voight did her a favor by getting her back onto Intelligence since Suarez got in her head by undermining her merit.

Voight listens to what Burgess has to say about a case.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

Burgess earned detective and her spot on Intelligence, but there’s a part of this that still feels tainted. Despite the reassurances, it’s evident that the politics of it all may have still gotten in the way in some regard.

The case was odd in that we had this operation with car parts and a lot of murder.

It’s a clear organization happening, with a nice tie-in to Gloria by the end of the hour, which will be quite the experience.

Burgess had some flubs, like the car incident, but she was quite the force who mostly took to calling the shots very well.

And in true Kim Burgess fashion, she was running her ass off during most of the case and also had to take one hell of a beating, too.

Burgess is on the run as she works on a big case.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

The latter was infuriating, as there is no way on earth that she and Suarez should’ve split. She could’ve gotten killed.

Nevertheless, I genuinely enjoyed seeing all the support that she got from some of the others.

The Burzek family moment that started the installment was absolutely precious, and it was so cute to see Mak supporting her mom and encouraging Burgess.

The locker room scene with Burgess and Ruzek was great because he could not imagine her leaving him and going somewhere else, even if it was for a short while.

Reid congratulates Burgess.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

Finally, we got some Burzek content, which was nice because it’s been lacking this season, and we have to get those glimpses leading up to the wedding.

Other Thoughts:

  • Torres was rolling those “R’s,” and his accent was so pronounced during this episode. I loved every second of it.
  • He also was back to that white tee.
  • Gloria coming back after Chicago PD Season 11 Episode 9 to haunt Torres (and us) wasn’t on my Bingo Card, and I’m wary.
  • Atwater’s absence was noticed and felt. Outside of Adam, Kevin is the only bigger Kim cheerleader. But at least we saw him on Chicago Med.
Cook and Ruzek listen attentively.
(Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)
  • Kiana rocking flannel, which is like Intelligence’s unofficial uniform? You love to see it!
  • There was a brief moment when I thought Reid looked like Roman, it threw me for a loop!
  • I absolutely love how much the series is leaning into utilizing Spanish more. Burgess gets to whip out the Spanish in almost all her episodes now.

that was unhealthy reaction from adam in the locker room tbh. its not unhealthy to want or need to keep eye on your partner at all time. he was acting they dont live together or she was going to another state or country. he almost freaked out at her going to another unit in the same city what would he do if she ever pull jason halstead on him? 😂 i remember they did same storyline with stellaride in 10x14. they were engaged and living together just like burzek. stella almost went to another firehouse. severide didnt almost freak out like adam. its canon adam has fear of losing kim and mack. emily dying in his arm must have made this fear grow. he took his eye of her for 1 minute and she was gone. i understand why he have this fear but he need to go to therapy and work on it. kim work through her issues. when will adam?

"There was a brief moment when I thought Reid looked like Roman, it threw me for a loop!" Same reaction here. Having disabused that initial impression; I wondered if he had played a serial killer on the TV series *Elementary*. (It was actually Desmond Harrington; as "Michael Rowan.") *Elementary* CBS, (2012-2019). Jonny Lee Miller; Lucy Liu. [Season 6, episodes 20, 21.]

@Brian Dougan, Shawn Hatosy notoriously has "one of those faces" because he has appeared in so many things. He was Pope on Animal Kingdom for many years, and he was a detective in Southland too.

He's sort of always popping up somewhere, but from that one angle, it was so weird how much he reminded me of Roman, I had to do a double take!

@Brian Dougan,

Addendum: If the *Elementary* reference to a "Reid/Roman/'Michael' " appearance similarity piqued any interest; here's an *Elementary* screenshot of Michael Rowan; as the serial killer. https://cbselementary.fandom.com/wiki/Michael_Rowan?file=S06E01-Michael_Rowan_head_shot.jpg

Oh how I love Detective Burgess era. I'm so happy that one of the core finally moved up & they showed that it's a process. She deserves it & I loved supportive Ruzek.

However, I found it hard to enjoy the episode. The pacing felt off, like it was searching for a hook or a point to kick off that never really came.

It was disappointing they chose another Detecitve who was so jaded and bitter that it felt like you couldn't enjoy what was happening for Burgess because she was so hellbent of bringing Kim down. Wouldn't it have been nice to see someone cheering for her.

I get that politics plays a part, it does in any business but there may have been a better way to play the story. It just felt very repetitive. Suarez was a cross between last seasons 2 miserable Detectives so I found it hard to like or care about her & her insistence to bring Kim down to her miserable level. They have overplayed the hand that everyone outside of the Unicorn Unit is an antagonist. This would've been a chance to show women supporting women. She doesn't know Kim, and what is wrong with still have a little bit of patrol in her, Why is Suarez way the only way.

I understand that they needed to hook Torres in for the upcoming storyline but the lack of Atwater was disappointing & how good would it have been to have Trudy offer some words of encouragement throughout the day, a female in Kim's corner as the counter balance to Suarez? Perhaps it wouldn't have felt so tipped towards negativity. Such an opportunity missed.

The case was clearly an afterthought & just didn't have any tension to it.

In a stellar season so far, I guess there was always going to be an off episode, and this was it.

However.... YAY for Burgess, that was a highlight.

@riveresque, I agree that the case itself was a bit dry, nothing particularly memorable about it outside of it setting up Gloria's return.

And as a result the episode was more "meh" than not, but Burgess killed it during the episode, and the season has been so strong the whole way through for me that even this episode holds up.

I really would have loved a Trudy/Burgess scene!

I can't believe that Kim wasn't made detective before this. She's on this elite unit and has been integral in so many cases. What was the holdup, exactly?

@Jack Ori, all this time, Burgess, Atwater, and Ruzek are just ranked officers. They get called "detective" on occasion because they're Intelligence officers, and presumably because they're in the specialized unit, they can get some deference. But the ENTIRE time of them being ten to 12 years in this unit, they've all been officers which is why fans were so annoyed with how static all three have been in their careers. It made ZERO sense.

And I'm assuming the plain clothes is because of the undercover component to their unit and a Voight thing, since he notoriously runs the streets.

@Carissa,I completely forgot she wasn't a detective already because of how central she is most of the cases and was completely confused trying to figure out what the heck she was if she wasn't one!

Because Plot?

It never made any sense that neither she nor Atwater made detective at any point. Ruzek, I could understand. He never wanted to be detective, had some little hiccups, etc. But Kim and Kevin worked themselves up to Intelligence from Patrol. Kim especially really has been instrumental in so many cases. But they kept the coveted title for Upstead, I guess.

@Carissa, This show always seems to be behind on any promotions. I have family in law enforcement and realistically anyone assigned to long term investigations would be granted detective off the bat its a requirement. Sometimes you test for the rank other times its meritoriously awarded but any investigative division the rank is needed. Used to be the rank was used to mark the more senior experienced members on the show but over time it was simply a rank used to mark who the show runners favorites were so this detective rank is a double edge sword.

Ironic: she was the last to join intelligence but the first to make detective if there was anyone Burgess is the most deserving. She was shot and left for dead twice, passed over time and again, put through the wringer more times than can be counted and yet she remained steadfast and committed to being a good cop she could have easily quit after all the setbacks but she kept going her levelling up is like the world finally giving her due. Seeing the promo for next week and her vest say ‘Detective’ I got misty eyed.

Case was meh but seeing Burgess step up handling it was what held the hour and seeing her take out the bad guy shows she has come a long way. More than that despite seeing the more dark aspects of policing she never lost her need to care and do right for victims. Chief Reid is interesting he’s more proactive than his predecessors but its clear he’ll want something from Burgess and sucks her promotion feels more as a political favor than something she earned.

Suarez was an interesting foil to Burgess a jaded aggressive detective who is a cautionary tale. A sign of what Burgess could have been had her own hardships eaten at her.

I hope Voight becomes more of a mentor to Burgess juggling the tasks of being a detective and a parent with a kid is something he knows all too well.

The return of Gloria Perez obviously was a shock I don’t think its as simple as her taking over her husband’s turf. But the number of enemies this team has some are bound to come back.

@Dean, Exactly. I've always been avid about Atwater becoming detective because I love his journey and feel he's a necessary person to climb the ranks. But so is Burgess, they have a similar motto of leading with sympathy and empathy, and I think that's what makes them so great and the light in the dark.

No doubt Kim has earned this. She's been put through the wringer, as you said, and she hasn't once faltered or slipped up. Also, and this is another point, unlike Atwater and Ruzek, she doesn't have marks on her file that stack against her do some bullcrap.

I think that works well in her favor as well, and I can see her continuing to climb the ranks.

The case was underwhelming. It only got interesting when we saw the Gloria connection, and I'm not looking forward to that per see, but it piqued my interest nonetheless.

The hour worked mostly because it was great to see the groundwork for Burgess getting what she's worked so hard for... it wasn't a bad episode at all, but it wasn't my favorite that they've delivered thus far. But this season has been so fire that even an hour like this is still a solid episode.

I would like to see more of Voight looking after Burgess.

It's interesting, I've had the first season playing in the background on and off the past couple of weeks, I don't even know why, while I've been working and such, and it reminded me of the Voight/Burgess dynamic that was subtle but there in those early seasons too. He genuinely has always been fond of her even if she didn't get the primary attention that Erin and Hailey did. Voight is such a "Girl Dad" sort, it's amusing in hindsight. So I loved that moment at the desk when you could tell he was genuinely so proud of her. Great journey.
