It's time to say goodbye to How to Get Away with Murder
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rumors are true and that the mystery drama will be wrapping up with its sixth season.
Before the show's May renewal, rumors were swirling that ABC was about to renew it for one last season.
However, ABC delayed the final season announcement, and instead renewed the show for an additional season.
“Viola Davis made television history with her unforgettable portrayal of iconic female antihero Annalise Keating,” ABC entertainment president Karey Burke said in a statement.
“I am eternally grateful to her, Pete Nowalk and Shondaland for creating and bringing to life such a smart, sophisticated and groundbreaking series that has long been an integral part of Thursday nights on ABC.”
“Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do — as it did here,” creator Pete Nowalk added in a statement.
“For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom."
"I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years."
"I also want to thank our fans. The only reason this show exists is because of your loyalty and enthusiasm. I can’t wait for you all to see how it ends, with twists and turns and all the craziness we love to create every Thursday night. Buckle up.”

While the show was a crown jewel in ABC's schedule in earlier seasons thanks to the star power of Viola Davis and the robust ratings, the numbers have sagged in later years.

The show was even on the bubble to be renewed for one last season as a result of the lower than expected ratings for How to Get Away with Murder Season 5.
It ultimately averaged 2.8 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo, sliding almost 30% year-to-year.
It remained a decent performer with a week of DVR factored in, but it was losing a considerable portion of its lead-in in live ratings.
While it would have been fair to assume that the power of it coming from Shondaland could keep it on the air for years to come, Shondaland has exited ABC Studios for Netflix.

When HTGAWM concludes, Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 will be the sole Shondaland shows on ABC.
Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 boast much stronger ratings than HTGAWM. Greys is also renewed through 2021, so it's possible that it will be the final Shondaland show to air on ABC.
As things stand, HTGAWM will premiere its sixth and final season on September 26 at 10/9c.
